Founded in 2014, Seattle-based Jobscan is an online resume optimization tool that helps you tailor your resume to a specific job posting to increase the odds of your resume making it through applicant tracking systems and on the desk of employers.

Plan Details

Jobscan is a resume optimization service with three tiers of membership. The Free Forever plan offers five match rate calculations and five keyword comparisons per month. If you need more than this, you can upgrade to a paid membership. Choose between a monthly subscription or a three-month subscription. Those who go with the three-month subscription will get their first month of service free. If you decide you don't like Jobscan for some reason, you can cancel at any time during this first month and you won't be charged.

Both paid subscription plans include unlimited match rate calculations and keyword comparisons, along with LinkedIn and cover letter optimization and additional resources. One of these plans is a better fit if you intend to apply to many jobs over the next few months.

Editing Tools

To use Jobscan, you upload or copy and paste your resume and then paste in the job posting you're interested in applying for. It will give you a percentage rating telling you how much of a match your current resume is for the job you want by evaluating your background, education, skills and important keywords that appear in the job posting.

You receive a report on Applicant Tracking System (ATS) findings. Many large businesses use ATS to narrow down resumes by keywords and skills so they can quickly find those who match their goals. Jobscan employs similar tools so you can see the areas where your resume is strong and where it could use improvement. You can then use the suggestions included in the report to improve your resume's odds of landing on the recruiter's desk.

If you'd like to rewrite your resume to be ATS-friendly, you can use some of Jobscan's cover letter and resume templates, though these are only available to paid subscribers of the site.

Sharing Tools

While you can download and save your new resume after running it through Jobscan, you can't directly import it from Jobscan into a job listing, unless that listing happens to come from Jobscan's job board. Otherwise, you'll have to download the resume when you're finished and upload or enter it when you apply for a new job. It's a few extra steps, but it shouldn't pose a serious issue to most users.

Interview and Resources

Jobscan doesn't currently have any resources to help you with interviews, but it does offer a free, comprehensive guide to writing a standout resume. There's also advice on how to write a cover letter and how to optimize your LinkedIn page to attract recruiters' attention. The Learning Center contains information on applicant tracking systems and video tutorials outlining how to use its tools as well. Not everyone will need these sorts of resources, but it's nice that Jobscan offers them to beginners.

Social Networking

Jobscan's tools can also help you optimize your LinkedIn page, which is a useful option if you tend to link to this as your resume instead of submitting a separate one. Whether you're actively pursuing jobs or hoping to draw recruiters to you, a well-optimized LinkedIn page can get you a job faster.

LinkedIn optimization is only available to paid Jobscan subscribers. If you choose the three-month plan with one month free, the LinkedIn optimization tool is only available after the one-month trial period is up. Consider going with the monthly plan instead if you'd like to start using this tool right away.

Help and Support

Jobscan's Learning Center contains helpful resources on writing resumes and using Jobscan's features. This is a good place to begin if you run into questions, but if you don't find the answer you need there, you'll have to reach out to the company directly. Unfortunately, the only way to do that is via email, so there isn't a way to get prompt answers when you need them. It would be nice if Jobscan also offered phone support, but for now, you'll just have to be patient and wait for a reply.
