Been with Trupanion almost a year now since I picked up my 8 week old Lab puppy last August. I have had no claims. They told me Penny can’t have ear infections covered because she had a red ear as a small puppy. Now they are raising my rates by $25 per month. I was paying $100/month and now it’s going up to $125 + tax. Time to find something else or opt out altogether. A complete rip off. Steer clear unless you want to be taken for a ride. If I could give less than one star I surely would!

My first vet had claimed for DIARRHEA AND GASTROINTESTINAL problems for my dog and we paid the entire deductible in 2020 before Trupanian would pay anything. Nothing wrong with that. That was part of the deal. However when we changed vets our second vet claimed for GASTROINTESTINAL AND DIARRHEA problems (note the change in order of maladies) for the same dog-same issues in 2022 and Trupanion said we had to pay the entire deductible again as these were two different problems. Are you kidding me. How dishonest is that! My dog had the same issues over those two periods of time and was given the same medications and care over those two different periods. Trupanion has refused to see that... Read More

Although they premiums don't increase due to number o f claims made I find this very hard to believe. My premiums have gone up at a minimum of $10 a month every year that I have had the insurance. My dog has had many problems and so many claims. Their claim that this isn't a factor is basically bull or else I would see it stay the same once in a while. The insurance itself is great and because of my dogs problems I won't cancel as his monthly expenses out weighs the premium right now.

Would give 0 stars if allowed. The company rips off owners of short nosed breeds. Before signing up for Trupanion I was advised that they cover breathing issues. Months later when my dog had an issue, they looked for anything and everything to say it was pre-existing. My vet even sent a letter saying it was not pre-existing and they still decline my claim. Rip off.

I insured my first Sheltie when I first got her, with Trupanion and had occasion several times to make claims. The service was fast and professional. I got a new Sheltie last April after my first one died at 10 years old and insured her also with Trupanion because I was so pleased with the claims process and the reasonable premiums. In my case, my premiums have actually declined at times with both of my Shelties. Premiums vary by geographic location and breed, as I understand it. This year my premium is only $35.12 per month. I highly recommend Trupanion, based on 12 years of dealing with the company.

we had 30 days free coverage thru the breeder with Trupanion. Our puppy had diarea after a five hour car ride and arriving to new surrounding. It was a gastronal problem that happened from leaving the breeder to arriving at our home!!!!)-Trupanian did not cover. They said it was pre existing condition. I would never use this company.

Whenever I need extra medical care for my "crew", and the vets ask which insurance I have, they say "oh good" when they hear Trupanion. The majority of costs are included, including dental extractions, reimbursement is easy (automatic submission through vet) so I don't have to put out too much $ up front (and even when I forget to do automatic, it's less than 48 hour turn around, even on weekends!), it's been pretty clear what is covered, the majority of specialty care (excluding consult fees and HST) is. Yes costs went up, but I know my vet fees went up over 20%, and the premium increase was not that high. Regardless, when you need them, it is such a relief to not have to worry... Read More

Been with Trupanion 3 years.. last year saw quite the increase... just received an email with another 20% increase. Is this the norm? It had gone from $143.19 to $171.45. They stated this: your area has increased thus they are raising the annual rate by 20%. I am quite connected to the animal community here.. we have numerous vet clinic and recently an Emergency Hospital open. Rates have not increased much if any over the last year here. Finding this worrisome as when I enrolled I was assured rates would not increase a whole lot each year.

I had been a long term customer of TRUPANION with 5 pets insured at one time. They denied a chiropractic claim indicating it was pre existing because I had my dog in for an adjustment before his policy was in place. This wasn’t an injury, just an adjustment for movement. They overturned the appeal and covered it. Now two years later, they approved one session and denied the next. They gave no consistency as to what they will cover on the chiropractic and acupuncture policies and it seems over the last few years, they won’t cover anything. Anyway, I am so disappointed in the changes that have taken place over the last year. Rates climbing and services denied. I have cancelled all policies.... Read More

Our service to date has been fine and I have no complaints from that perspective, but a about month after our Bernese’s first birthday, we received a letter stating that our monthly bill will be increased by 15%!! I called Trupanion to share my displeasure. The Trupanion representative was professional and explained that the increased cost was due to the increasing coverage costs. I requested to talk to the manager and was refused, and was notified that there was no one in management that I could speak with??!! Seems like they get you for the first year (the critical time to get pet insurance) and then start increasing your monthly costs after that first year…it’s misleading and dishonest.

they will find any reason to deny your claim. this is their true service. don't waste your time. they are in the business of making and keeping money and don't care about your pet. don't be fooled

Trupanion is the best insurance long term. No increase because of claims. No yearly limit on same claims.

Don't bother getting pet insurance. I was with Trupanion for 7 years and only was able to use the insurance once. Every year monthly costs went up, we started at 30$ a month and were at 75$ a month by the time we canceled. We were basically being penalized for being good dog owners and having a healthy dog. Over the 7 years, we were with Trupanion, we have paid at least 5000$ for insurance that we were never able to use because our vet costs are quite low in our area and fees never met the deductible( $250 - 500$ deductible over the years). The only time we could use Trupaion the bill was only 400$. So we basically flushed 4500$ down the drain. It is much smarter to put away the... Read More

I lost my job because of covid and my one biggest frustration I have faced with Trupanion is not being reminded on the phone that increasing my deductible to be able to make payments every month to keep my insurance is a permanent change. My deductibles were lower and it went up to $1000 for all four of my cats. Those that took advantage of the policies ruined it for the rest of us, and it sucks. Wish that Trupanion looked at each case separately instead of dropping us all in the same boat. If you go with Trupanion, remember that if you change your deductible to higher to make lower payments every month after you enrolled at a lower deductible with higher monthly payments, you'll never... If your puppy even so much at farts at the vet during a visit within the 30 day waiting period (or at a prior visit before signing up with Trupanion) they will not cover anything BM related, gastrointestinal related, if you dog so much as has an itch they will not cover anything allergies or skin related. Save the money you would pay them monthly and put that aside to pay vet bills. Please read the reviews below. They have a poor rating for a reason. I am not looking forward to the cancelling process which seems to get terrible reviews as well.

UPDATE: May 5/2020 Happy to say that our claim was approved. It was a very long and frustrating process, especially for a first claim, so I've given more stars but not full as of yet. The manager that I spoke with was lovely. It would have been great to have this option sooner. They are now going to provide a summary of what might not be covered in the future, this may be a beneficial option for anyone signing up with an existing pet. I hope it will save us some frustration in the future. Time will tell how future claims will go (although here's hoping we won't have any!) I had been with Trupanion for 8 month. No issues, no complains. They start charging me since I sign up, no big question asked. They told us that if anything happens they will cover us. Due to a virus or something, my two dog got sick, took them to the emergency, fill the complain with Trupanion and the nightmare started. From the begging they show of how they are not willing to pay. One of my dog was denied since he already have diarrhea once. Seems that getting sick is a preexisting condition. For my other dog they start asking for their previous vet record. I wonder how they didn't ask them on the enrollment process. This clearly show how they are happy to get your money but they... This is an appalling company that will do their best to find any excuse to reject your claims - even if the excuse is a tenuous one found on the pet's medical records. My dog's medical records in the UK (so all her former insurance is void) was used as a reason for rejecting a claim for a different medical condition although there was tenuous connection - but it became an excuse. Appeals are the customer's burden - the company does not respond by asking for more information even though they claim they do not have enough information. And if they don't have enough information, why don't they ask us rather than reject outright? Trupanion claim they have an expert reviewing panel - name them -... Read More

This is the worst company I have ever encountered. I thought for a cause like animals they would at least be true to what they are branding which is to help owners and their pets but it is the complete opposite. I took on Trupanion a year ago because I had heard it was a good company to trust with any medical issues. 2 months ago we switched our stairs from carpet to hardwood and my dog unfortunately fell down the stairs and tore a ligament in his right leg and also needed joint repair because of this accident. My dog could not walk, he was laying down unable to move. We took him to the vet and that’s when our vet told us he needed immediate surgery. The vet put in his records that this... Read More

I had the Trupanion for 30 days, and filed two claims during that time. I have a new puppy that bumped her head and swallowed a chew toy. I was really excited about Trupanion because it seemed like such a great deal, with a $250 deductible and 90% coverage. Interestingly, even though they boast a 90% coverage, out of the 1,1000 I paid in total... only 300 was covered. They find ways to This is pretty pointless to me, especially when they want me to pay $160 a month to ensure her. It also took about three weeks for my first claim to be processed, and the customer service was very poor when I tried to get clarification on coverage. There are other affordable options that cover the same... Read More

TERRIBLE customer service and communication. I called about an allergy claim which was denied just to know about the reason. I initially enrolled my pet in April, changed the deductible from $250 to $300 in July, submitted the claim in August. They told me that once I changed the deductible I would have to go through the 30 days wait period again, which I was not informed when I changed the deductible over the phone. But I accepted their reasoning to respect their company policy even though the agent on the phone did not properly inform me of this. Then I also asked about another claim that I submitted twice online, received confirmation twice in my email, however, did not appear on the... Read More

They trap you! Beware. I added a chiropractor rider and submitted a claim. The employee never mentioned this 5 day waiting period over the phone or else I wouldn't have claimed it right away. They said that if I use it for an issue in the 5 days, they will never cover for that same issue. I asked them to review my call to see that the employee didn't mention anything. They said that the declaration page that was sent by email mentions this 5 day period. I looked back and it says 0 waiting period! In the end after being with them for 3 years and hardly submitting claims, they said they couldn't do anything because the 5 day waiting period is hidden somewhere in the policy... I don't know...
