Founded in 1987, Medjet is and industry-leading air medical transport and travel security membership program for travelers. If a member is sick or injured more than 150 miles from home, Medjet arranges and pays for air medical transport to the hospital of their choice at home. The company serves individuals and corporate clients. Medjet is located in Birmingham, Alabama, but protects travelers worldwide.

Why Medjet is our Number 1 Choice

Medjet is our top choice for air-medical transportation services because of its extensive partnerships with air carriers and air ambulance providers to cover the needs of their members, including those with pre-existing conditions. Program members are eligible for transport to their home country and city hospital of choice if they are just 150+ miles from their home. It works domestically as well as internationally.

The company most notably differentiates from other players in the market through its commitment to arrange air medical transfer to the member's home country hospital of choice (not just "nearest acceptable"), regardless of medical necessity.  Members with security response benefits also have access to 24/7 security and crisis response teams, and security evacuation if necessary, for a broad range of safety threats like violent crime, natural disasters, political threats, terrorism, and more.

Air Fleet

Medjet currently partners with hundreds of private air ambulances and medical escorts in locations across the world. This ensures quick 24/7 access to transport in a medical emergency. Minimum aircraft accommodations allow for one critical patient, one family member and medical personnel.

Medjet requires all aircraft to be twin engine with a minimum of two certified pilots for each aircraft. All affiliates are also required to comply with Medjet liability insurance policy, ensuring all patients receive service regardless of air transportation costs.

Plan Details and Differentiators

Two types of Medjet memberships are available: Short-Term or Annually. Residents of the U.S, Canada, and Mexico may enroll. Specialty memberships (Study abroad, Expat180 and Expat265) are available to cover extended stays (longer than 90 consecutive days) abroad.

Key features include:

  • No "acceptable facility" or "medically necessary" clauses
  • No transport costs limits
  • No deductibles, no claim forms
  • Covers pre-existing conditions (up to age 75)
  • Transfer to a home hospital of your choice
  • Hospitalized more than 150 miles from home – minimum for transfers
  • No medical necessity – transfer to another hospital of their choice in their home country even when facilities are considered adequate.

What’s included with MedjetAssist:

  • Worldwide air medical transport
  • Medical monitoring/ consultation
  • Telephone interpretation
  • Emergency message relay
  • Legal referrals

  • Travel security and crisis response

Fine Print

There are certain limitations in areas covered particularly those with travel restrictions by the United States Department of State. Regular membership allows up to two medical transport per membership year except for repatriation transports involving multiple enrolled family members requiring simultaneous repatriation. Transport restrictions are imposed for individuals suspected of having or have been diagnosed with Biosafety Class Level 3 and above illnesses or diseases by the Center for Disease Control or the National Institutes of Health.

Medjet Summary

Medjet comes highly recommended because it offers the best coverage and does not place cost limits on its transport services. It even offers members the option of transferring to a hospital of their choice when adequate facilities are available in their location. While other companies pose restrictions in terms of facilities to cut their transportation costs, Medjet gives members the freedom to choose to recover at home. All in all, Medjet trumps the competition by a good margin in terms of the services it offers.

Be aware... They have odd rules about address changes and make sure you read the fine print. We sold our home and purchased another home in a different state. You cannot change your address online. You have to call in. All was going smoothly until the representative asked if we were both in the same place. We were not. Due to travel, I am in a different state than my home AND my spouse. No go. They needed an override to approve an address change. Really? Asked to be transferred to a supervisor. By this time, I was pretty annoyed as all I wanted to do was change my address and renew my membership. And I told the representative their rules were fucking stupid. Transferred to... Read More

Our vacation to Greece ended in Erding, Germany, when my husband made an emergency departure from the plane. Fortunately, the town had excellent health care to treat his very dangerous diagnosis of compartment syndrome. Unfortunately, few people in the town spoke English, making the medical explanations, interviews, questionnaires, and insurance forms a real challenge. During the ten days that we stayed there, Tom had 3 surgeries, and I stayed in 4 different locations. I also spent hours on the phone trying to negotiate transport from the company from which we had purchased trip insurance. Imagine my relief when I called Medjet to ask if they might be able to get us home. A... Read More

While wintering in Key West, Florida, I became ill with a serious health issue. After a local hospital completed a procedure, I went into respiratory failure. As a bi-lateral lung transplant recipient, it was absolutely critical that I get to my primary hospital and my lung care team in Boston, Massachusetts as soon as possible. MedJet handled my transfer with both impressive efficiency and true compassion. From my first call to safe delivery in Boston, the staff and medics took great care of me, providing both assurance and comfort. It is amazing to me that all it took was a MedJet membership card and a simple phone call. There were no additional invoices or paperwork! MedJet’s annual... Read More

While every travel business is helping consumers, Medjet has not extended the expiration dates of their contracts during this COVID period b/c "you can still travel domestically"! Seriously? This is not a customer based business.

Wonderful experience during a terrible time. MedJet evacuated my husband and me from a Caribbean island after he was hospitalized following a scuba diving accident. They handled everything quickly and efficiently... from the flight to ambulance transportation on both ends, to getting us through customs and immigrations in two countries. The flight nurse and paramedic were excellent, and the two pilots got us back to the U.S. safely and quickly. I would never have been able to handle all of the details, but MedJet did, leaving me free to worry about what I needed to worry about—my husband’s health. So glad we had MedJet membership.

When my husband became extremely ill on a European cruise this spring, he was removed from the ship and hospitalized in Austria. Once given the diagnosis from the Austrian doctors, his physician at home and I were very concerned with his medical care given the extent of his illness. The hospital did not have air conditioning, nor did they have private rooms to allow him to rest comfortably… and I was very concerned about him being exposed to other illnesses. While most of the staff spoke English, there was a slight language barrier at times which was frustrating. It's stressful enough to have a spouse hospitalized, but being in another country when it happens adds a lot of additional... Read More

If a Medjet member is hospitalized while traveling, more than 150 miles from home, Medjet arranges transport for them to the hospital they choose back home. Unfortunately, if a member is NOT hospitalized, they are not eligible for a transport.

We’ve had a Medjet membership for several years but never thought we would have to use it. That all changed when, on a Mediterranean cruise, my husband suffered a perforated ulcer which resulted in a heart attack. The ship was docked in Malta and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital there. After major surgery and ten days in intensive care and four additional days in cardiac critical care, his doctors agreed that he would be able to return to our local hospital in California. However, they would release him only if he flew in an air ambulance. If he had to travel commercial, even first class with a nurse, we would have to stay in Malta at least six more weeks. I contacted... Read More

We were brought home from a hospital in another country and delivered to the hospital that we needed to be in six hours later, pillow to pillow. A Medjet membership card and one phone call is all it took. No paperwork, no bills. Guess what’s in my wallet every time we travel! Thanks again Medjet!

When my husband fell on a cruise, he was taken to a local hospital as soon as the ship docked in Aruba. There was no way I wanted him operated on there, but our insurance was of no help (although it did eventually pay for the hospital), thank God for Medjet. Their team made arrangements to get him home, showed up, put him in an air ambulance (I got to go with him!) and got him to our hospital at home. It was so smooth and the team was fabulous. We almost didn't buy the coverage but our travel agent insisted...we are FOREVER in her debt, as well as Medjet's. The hospital in Aruba he was in was ok, but definitely NOT the place I wanted him to have surgery in.
