Overview

Tovala brings a new concept to the meal subscription industry. It provides pre-packaged raw, healthy, low-calorie meals. These are cooked in 20 minutes or less in a special Tovala Oven, which scans a barcode on the meal packaging and sets the adequate cooking settings for each meal. The company offers eight meal choices weekly, which include gluten-free and vegetarian options.

About Tovala

Tovala meal delivery service features a weekly menu of eight different pre-packaged meals, of which at least two are vegetarian and three are gluten-free.  All meals are balanced to be between 400-800 calories and can be cooked in the Tovala Oven in under 20 minutes. This makes home-cooked meals easy and eliminates prep time and cleanup.  The meal ingredients are fresh and do not contain preservatives. The salmon is farm raised, the chicken is antibiotic- and hormone-free, and the pork is hormone-free as well. Each meal includes allergen information in addition to its nutritional values.

Apart from Tovala’s meal delivery service, Tovala’s premiere feature is its Tovala Oven, which aims to cook meals at exactly the right time, temperature and mode. The oven boasts toast, steam, bake, broil, reheat, and barcode-scanning modes, along with programmable digital temperature and time displays, and is controlled by the Tovala mobile app. The Tovala Oven barcode scan can be used to automatically set the cooking settings for the Tovala ready-to-cook meals or for all of Trader Joe’s frozen foods with oven/toaster cooking instructions.

Customers may also order Tovala meals through the mobile app. This app lets customers to scan food in the supermarket to make sure it is compatible with the oven. Lastly, the app boasts a library of 60+ recipes to cook from scratch in the Tovala Oven.

Meal Plan Options

Each meal is $12 and serves one person. Tovala offers flexible plans of 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 12 meals a week, which can be easily switched, paused, skipped for a week or more, or just canceled.

On their website, Tovala features the 90+ customer reviews it has received on Facebook. Facebook users have awarded the company an average of 4.6 stars out of five. Final Thoughts on Tovala

Tovala sets itself apart from other meal delivery subscription services with their convenient, fresh, and ready-to-cook meals that are efficiently cooked in the Tovala Oven. However, Tovala is better suited for those who are not on a budget, as its per meal price is on the higher end of the spectrum of the industry standard, and the oven is a hefty separate and necessary one-time purchase.

Your initial advertising does not mention (that I could find) that your home router must be graded 2.4 ghz. My router is 5Ghz and I cannot use the bar code. I've not contacted Verizon because I anticipate becoming bogged down in their tech lingo. I use my oven and find it does a fine job. But I feel I'm not getting the full potential of the oven. Discovering this glitch was a great disappointment.

The intended service is quite convenient, and the online ordering of weekly meals is mostly well done. The food is OK, it's from blah to quite good. I found it fun to have a fluctuating variety of meals each week. The instructions provided with each meal package are nice too. However, I canceled the plan since their delivery provider was fully involved in the experience of being fully inept. Twice so far they have shown that the delivery was complete when it actually wasn't. I didn't find their support chats helpful because real solutions weren't achieved, but the "people" were polite. The Tovala service is a bit pricey and I'd expect their food to always be excellent (it's OK) and... Read More

I am 80 years old, and no longer have the stamina to stand in prep and chill in the kitchen. I love my Tovala meals. I feel it’s very economical, because if I had to buy all of the grocery items to prepare the menus they give it would still be more of a cost.

I can honestly say that the response from customer service is prompt - BUT, via email ONLY. No people. No phone number. I guess it's the new trend in "customer service." I have returned the microwave oven. The food is abominable. I am at a loss to understand how anyone can truly say the meals are tasty. The pasta is like "baby food," mushy and overcooked. what finally got me to cancel the service, though, is the chicken. I eat a LOT of chicken. It's my go-to source of protein. I also eat beef, fish, rabbit, not pork, but I eat mostly chicken. My nose told me that there was something "off" about the chicken. I decided to let it sit - after cooking - in my fridge for a day, to... Read More

So far the actual deliveries have been fine. Hoping that there will be meals created with less sodium and cholesterol. The meals are very delicious though.

My first delivery was great, however they ignore food allergies so beware of that. If you say you cant eat a certain food item, they will send it anyways. They also use FedEx as their only shipper and meals would arrive days late. My latest order was packed so poorly, none of the meat was cold. It was on FedEx’s truck for 2 days and 2 day old warm chicken and pork is a recipe for food poisoning. You can only get ahold of them via online chat and there is no after hour support. If you want to cancel, you must contact them on line. This company has a long way to go with how they package the food, be open to other shipping methods, and do better quality control. Many of my meals were... Read More

I had multiple meal deliveries that were late, resulting in the meals being warm and unsafe for consumption. After 4/5 deliveries I asked to cancel my subscription since I was simply having to throw away all the contents of the box every time. Tovala told me that it would be $200 to cancel my subscription and that I was required to purchase one more meal delivery to meet the 6 deliveries agreed to in the fine print. This is fraudulent. They are charging consumers for meals they acknowledge are consistently delivered late and not safe for consumption
