Rype is an online language learning application based on daily one-on-one lessons between students and handpicked, professional teachers. Lessons are 30-minutes long and users can choose from over 100 teachers for any of the seven languages the app offers. Language programs are highly customizable and can be taken any time of the day, on any kind of device.

What’s included?

A single Rype subscription grants customers all-access membership to 100+ qualified teachers for all seven of the application's languages. The languages currently available are Spanish, French, German, English, Arabic, Mandarin, and Italian. This means users can book with teachers for any language without having to pay additional fees. New teachers are added to Rype every day.

Format

  • Online courses (personalized language track, 30-minute video or audio private lessons)

How does it work?

Rype was created for language learners that need a middle ground between expensive tutoring, unengaging group classes, and expendable, unsophisticated mobile apps. Practicality and comfortability are two major points of focus for the application. Because courses can be scheduled during and for any time of the day, and the online interface can be accessed on mobile devices, users ultimately have total control over the when and where of their private lessons.

Scheduling a class on Rype

Booking a class on Rype can take as little as 15 seconds. All users have to do is select a coach from their membership portal, pick a date of their preference, and then choose time frame during which they are free. Users must then input some basic information–first and last name, email address, Skype username, and video or audio only preference.

Alternatively, users can book lessons by time availability instead of by matched coaches. This means they can select a day and time they are free in and will be automatically assigned an appropriate coach based on the user's date and language level.

Taking a class on Rype

After booking a class on Rype, users will be reminded of their lesson via email. Once it is time for the user's lesson, their coach will contact the student on Skype and ask if they are ready to begin the lesson. Lessons may vary greatly depending on the language coach and level of language expertise.

When the lesson is over, students receive a personal feedback document from their coach. This document includes any exercise corrections, new material they have learned during the lesson, and follow-up assignments along with additional resources so students have something to keep themselves busy between lessons.

How Rype selects its teachers

Rype has a 5-step method for hiring teachers to ensure that users get the best talent available. The company starts by making sure teachers are not only fluent in English, but can also express themselves with vibrant personality and professionalism. Rype then evaluates each candidate's learning fundamentals, teaching abilities, and previous reviews on other language coaching websites, if procurable. Candidates must have at least three years of language teaching experience to qualify for being a Rype teacher. After that, a senior Rype coach will have a one-on-one with the candidate and perform special exercises, activities, and questions. Candidates will enter Rype's 60-day trial where they must uphold a standard of excellence once that is done. Finally, Rype teachers are expected to maintain a 5.0-star rating if they wish to continue their language lessons with the company.

Costs

Rype charges a subscription that gives users access to everything the application has to offer. The company's three payment options are a 3-month plan for $175/mo, a 12-month plan for $235/mo, and an annually paid 12-month plan for $215/mo. Rype asks for a consumer's credit card information up-front and the subscription renews automatically so that a customer's scheduled classes are not interrupted. Users may cancel said renewal via email. Rype also offers a 7-day risk-free trial but consumers should be aware that they must choose a payment plan which will be automatically charged to their credit card after the 7-day trial period.

Bottom Line

Rype is a new and exciting way to learn languages at your own pace and time. Although the idea of online language coaching isn't anything new or novel, the way Rype executes it is certainly noteworthy for the level of input users have in selecting a time and place in addition to their teacher–and for how stringent the selection process is for said teachers. We recommend Rype for anyone looking for alternatives to traditional language learning methods.

I tried it for a month and it wasn't for me. However, it is set to auto-renew by default and so it billed me for the next month (179.99). It hit my bank two days later and I contacted support and asked to get it canceled and refunded however they literally have a 2 day no refund policy with no exceptions. Very shady!!!

In today's tech day and age, this the first time I've had a company refuse to refund me when I didn't use their services at all. I was late in cancelling my free subscription one day, and even then, they would not refund me. That's how they get you. I wanted to cancel because their services are subpar. Their teacher selection in tiny compared to services like iTalki, and the teachers are not certified. Literally we are paying these teachers significantly less than minimum wage (about $5 an hour), and this is really unfair after Rype takes a cut.
