Founded in 1999 and based in Massachusetts, for years Monster.com has been one of the most recognizable names in online job searches. Although it has subsequently been overtaken by Indeed and Careerbuilder, Monster is still a huge resource for job seekers. The company has offices worldwide, and employs more than 5,000 people.

Overall Rating: 4.3 / 5 (Excellent)

Monster.com is synonymous with online job search. The service aggregates from thousands of job sites and boards and averages around a million jobs posted a month. Monster is great for those looking to cast as wide a net possible in their job search. Its job filters, however, do not allow for the level of result specificity we see on other comparable sites. Additionally, its notifications are lacking in many customization options. Still, millions have found employment through Monster over the years, and their presence and overall usefulness are undeniable.

Monster.com Website Features

Ease of Navigation - 5 / 5

Monster offers a bare bones and easy-to-use filtering mechanism. Once job seekers conduct their original search, they can access a quick pull down menu on the left hand column. This allows them to filter their job results by location, company name, date posted, and job status. The advanced search offers the same filtering options as well. Prospective applicants cannot filter according to salary, industry, or experience level. Monster, however, has a rather robust resume component. Users can upload their resume file from their computer, or directly from Google docs or Dropbox. Monster's automated appraisal will give them 100% free feedback on their resume's content and appearance, as well as recommendations for improvement. Beyond this, Monster offers a paid service where experts help draft resumes that highlight applicants' particular skills, experiences, and value. This service also provides keyword assistance and screening software optimization.

Monster.com Notifications

Job Alerts - 4.5 / 5

Monster users can set job alerts that match the search they are currently engaged in. All they have to do is provide an email address. However, the site does not appear to have the ability to customize results. Furthermore, it is not clear as to the notification frequency, and whether or not this is customizable as well.

Monster.com Customer Experience

Additional Services - 3.5 / 5

As one of the original and longest-standing job site services on the web, Monster.com has had its share of complaints over the years. From the job seeker's perspective, problems overwhelmingly center around receiving unsolicited emails. Customers often complain about receiving job alerts and other promotions after they have repeatedly unsubscribed from the mailing lists. Monster has also been the victim of personal information theft in the past where hackers have sold customer details which resulted in many cases of identity theft. However, in 2018 Monster came under the leadership of a new CEO and the company has endeavored to make strides to improve customer experience.

been on monster before and they had set up my resume. went back to it and uploaded my resume and put into the "assessment" they offer. got my assessment back and needs serious work. i can pay $350 for my resume, that monster put together, to be up to par with what monster says is right. is my resume good and they just want money? did they give a junk resume just so they get money? if you cant build something in the first place, why pay for it to be done again.
