Overall Rating: 4.6 / 5 (Excellent)

Future Capital is a privately held company that offers active portfolio management services. If you don't feel comfortable managing your own retirement savings, the company offers a simple, handy solution.

Customers can have their traditional, roll-over, and Roth IRAs managed through the company. Generally speaking, the company invests conservatively in mutual funds and ETFs on your behalf. If you have a 401K account through your current or former employer, Future Capital can also manage it for you but investment choices will be limited to those offered by your employer.

Future Capital believes that everyone should have access to retirement investment expertise, regardless of the size of their holdings. The company doesn't require a minimum balance. You can build your retirement savings at your own pace, making contributions to your account as you are able. These relatively relaxed rules make the company a good fit for young and beginning investors who may not have accumulated much retirement savings.

We noted that Future Capital doesn't offer a mobile app. Rather, investors can access their account information online via Future Capital's website. Given that much the financial world has gone mobile, we think that Future Capital is operating from a disadvantage in this regard and customers who rely on their phones may find keeping track of their retirement investments cumbersome.

Future Capital Account Features

Account Features - 4.8 / 5

You can hire Future Capital to manage your ]traditional or Roth IRA. Your assets will be used to purchase mutual funds, which are considered conservative investments, and ETFs. You can also engage Future Capital to manage your existing employer-sponsored 401K.

The company offers active portfolio management services. If you're more of a do-it-yourself investor, you may not find Future Capital's solution suitable. But many retirement savers don't have a lot of experience selecting investment vehicles, trading, or balancing their accounts, and active portfolio management is a convenient (and potentially safer) route to take.

Future Capital is a robo advisor. The company also employs SEC-registered financial advisors who develop investment models. When you sign up for services through Future Capital, financial decisions are made on your behalf based on these models.

Customers can consult directly with the financial advisors Future Capital hires for an additional fee.

Advisors

Future Capital is a robo advisor service. The company engages independent SEC-registered advisors to develop investment models to govern investment decisions made on your behalf. These advisors do not make individual investment decisions for clients.

The assets you place in your Future Capital accounts are managed automatically. Future Capital services are designed for people who prefer to take a hands-off approach and aren't necessarily interested in talking about or approving each trade.

If you want to make changes to your overall investment strategy, you can do so online. No contact with an advisor is required.

Online Experience

To get started with Future Capital, you will first be asked to provide basic identifying information. You'll then indicate your retirement objectives and goals, as well as information about your current investments. Customers may be a little wary at that point because Future Capital asks you to indicate where your investments are held, your username with that institution, and your password. We think that's a little too much information to ask for online just to learn more about your options and the company's services. But if you continue, the company then performs a review of your financial position vis-a-vis your current savings and the goals you have established. The process includes performing a gap analysis which helps you understand how and whether your current investments will comfortably carry you through retirement. Next, the company will recommend an investment strategy.

Future Capital publishes a limited number of articles in its blog but the articles are objectively written and can help both beginning and seasoned investors learn more about retirement planning.

Future Capital Fees and Penalties

Fees and Discounts - 4.8 / 5

Future Capital charges a fee for its active portfolio management services that depends on the fair market value of your portfolio. You'll be charged a $20 monthly fee for each $50,000 you have in your managed account. If your investments don't equal a round number—in this case, a multiple of $50,000—you'll be charged an additional $9 per month up to the next $50,000 increment.

Future Capital could do a better job of highlighting the fees it charges for active portfolio management services. To learn about fees, you can click on a link called All Legal Documents. Its service agreement can be found within that section. But the company could make it easier to find this information.
