Founded in 1999, LegalZoom offers spouses who are considering divorce the opportunity to search for, evaluate, and hire an attorney to represent them. The company also provides a comprehensive library of downloadable forms and support services for clients who want to pursue an uncontested divorce independent of counsel. LegalZoom is located in Glendale, California.

Breadth of Services

Whether you're seeking a simple dissolution, an uncontested divorce, or need help settling a contentious divorce case, LegalZoom has a solution to meet your needs. The company provides several tiers of service.

The first is a document plan that you can use to file for dissolution or uncontested divorce on your own. LegalZoom gathers all the forms you'll need to have your divorce approved by a judge in your local jurisdiction and completes them for you based on the information you provide through a series of questionnaires. LegalZoom's customer support team can provide all the assistance you need to complete the questionnaires. Customer support is available via email, phone, or online chat. LegalZoom also offers a mobile app for iOs and Android users.

The second is a subscription plan that affords users access to a larger library of legal forms plus attorney consultations covering a wide range of personal and commercial legal issues. This service does not cover the completion of forms by LegalZoom and probably doesn't represent the most convenient option for spouses seeking a quick, easy way to file for divorce.

If your divorce case is complicated by such issues as child custody or property division disagreements, LegalZoom can connect you with an attorney who practices family law in your state. Simply enter your location and LegalZoom presents you with a list of qualified attorneys in its network. You can read attorney profiles and client ratings before deciding who to engage.

Pricing and Transparency

LegalZoom charges a flat fee of $499 for its divorce document package. The fee covers the documents themselves, expert preparation, and unlimited access to LegalZoom's customer support team either via email, online chat, or telephone.

You can also purchase a LegalZoom subscription for $40. Subscribers have unlimited access to legal advice they can use to manage any number of legal issues, from opening a business to estate planning.

If you hire an attorney from the LegalZoom directory to represent you in your divorce—and having counsel is critical in a contested divorce—rates are set by the individual lawyer you select. However, LegalZoom customers may receive a 25% discount off the hourly rates normally charged by attorneys in their network.

Educational Materials

LegalZoom publishes one of the most comprehensive blogs we've seen on any of the divorce lawyer websites we've reviewed. You'll find articles that discuss various approaches to divorce, including mediation and dissolution, information on common divorce issues like marital and premarital property division, and more. There are specific articles on divorce law in each of the 50 states.  In addition, once you enter your location in the form provided for seeking help with a divorce, the site provides an overview of divorce law in your jurisdiction.

I'm not happy with this service!! I paid $499 to start my divorce, answered all the questions and was under the assumption that it was being mailed to me. I waited and waited and got nothing. The next time I tried signing in the site wouldn't accept my login info. I got busy with life and just put it off. I finally called about a year later, crazy I know....but I was given a password to login and then I couldn't access anything and gave up again. The next time I called they said that I had to pay the $499 again because my forms were no longer the right ones for my county and that I would have to fill out new ones. This really upset me since I know I had everything done and just needed to... Read More

Terrible service. They made a number of mistakes, lied about several aspects of their services, had unexplained and unreasonable delays, and it was extremely difficult to speak with someone beyond basic customer service. Worst of all, LegalZoom doesn't even do the actual work. They outsource it to CompleteCase.com. Even when you call LegalZoom's divorce department, you are actually talking to CompleteCase.com, though they won't tell you that. Steer clear.

I would suggest just doing it yourself, I was advised paper work was sent out to my spouse, tracking numbers provided months later stated " label created, waiting for package" , Spouse never got them. After asking them to Please resend, they stated because I was " out of the year" of purchase, they would charge me another $20 after already paying $800 on top of court fees. They would not send me proof of mailing the paper work out. I asked for a refund and they refused saying services were rendered without proof of delivery. More anxiety and stress on top of an already stressful situation, DONT DO IT.
