T-Mobile, which has merged with Sprint, is one of the big three wireless carriers in the United States. The company currently offers 5G coverage in all 50 states. Founded in 1999, it's a subsidiary of the German company Deutsche Telekom AG and has U.S. headquarters Bellevue, Washington.

Performance

T-Mobile has the largest 5G network in the nation, covering most of the continental U.S. and some parts of Alaska and Hawaii. The company invested some $40 billion and over three years to improve its 5G infrastructure. It is the only company we've reviewed that offers unlimited data across its 5G network. If you own a 5G-enabled device and live in a location where T-Mobile offers 5G service, theoretically you could experience 5G speeds at all times. That's a significant differentiator among cellular service providers.

In 2020, J.D. Power announced that T-Mobile scored highest for customer care among the four leading cellular networks. (Now that T-Mobile has merged with Sprint, there are only three.) It's the fourth consecutive year that T-Mobile earned that top spot.

Price

T-Mobile promotes itself as "the un-carrier" and it stands out for offering reasonably priced plans with no long-term contracts. It offers three unlimited plans. Two are known as Magenta plans. If you sign up for Autopay and connect two lines to your account, you'll pay $60 per month per line with the regular Magenta plan and $70 per month per line with the Magenta Plus plan. These rates are very competitive in the industry for unlimited plans, so they're definitely worth considering if you are a big data consumer. These prices include all taxes and fees, too. We appreciate T-Mobile's transparency around the pricing of these two plans—many other carriers do not quote prices that include tax and fees. Oddly, the price quoted on T-Mobile's website for its lower-tier Essential plan does not include taxes and fees. Nobody's perfect. But T-Mobile makes it easier for consumers to comparison shop and we're all in favor of that.

T-Mobile's top-of-the-line plan, Magenta Plus includes a few features not offered by its lower-priced unlimited plans. With Magenta Plus, you get Netflix Standard for 2 HD screens, 20GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data, and unlimited 3G hotspot data. If you're out and about often, whether parked at your local coffee shop or working from the beach, that extra data can support your lifestyle perfectly.

T-Mobile offers discounted plans to customers 55 and older, members of the US military, veterans, and their families, and first responders and their families. Adults 55+ will pay $35 per month per line for a two-line Magenta Plan and $45 per month per line for a two-line Magenta Plus plan. These rates are available only if you enroll in autopay.

Military members, veterans, first responders and their families may choose between a $25/month/line unlimited plan or a $35/month/line unlimited plan, if you have four lines on your account and enroll in auto pay. These plans also include a month of free Netflix and free plane WiFi.

Trustworthiness

In the interest of full disclosure, about 2 million T-Mobile customers were hacked back in August 2018 and despite initially saying that no personal information was stolen, this was later proven to be inaccurate. However, no financial information or Social Security Numbers were stolen and T-Mobile alerted the customers who were affected. There have not been any security issues since then.

We also dug into customer reviews and were surprised at how well T-Mobile seemed to do considering that cell phone providers usually have more bad reviews than good ones. In J.D. Power's 2019 U.S. Wireless Customer Care study, which looked at customer satisfaction with their wireless carrier, T-Mobile was the only company to earn a five-star rating, beating out competitors like Verizon and AT&T.
