Founded in 2016, Smalls Cat Food is a subscription pet food service, offering human-grade foods with no BPAs, preservatives, or fillers of any kind. The company specializes in cat food. Smalls' product line-up includes a choice of four different proteins, available in multiple textures, so picky cats can find their favorites. Smalls is located in New York, New York.

Product Selection

Cats are notoriously picky eaters. Smalls addresses that by offering a wide variety of cat foods. The company's product catalog includes foods made from four different protein choices, which are broken down into bird, fish, cow, and other bird categories. Foods are available in wet and freeze-dried form. Within the wet food category, foods are further classified as smooth ( a creamy pate) and ground (a somewhat chunkier version). Wet recipes contain between 13% and 15% crude protein, which is about average for a premium brand.

Smalls also offers some add-ons, designed to supplement its freeze-dried formulae. Add-ons come in different flavors. That's one more way Smalls caters to finicky felines. The company's product catalog also includes catnip treats. Smalls advertises that cats receive "free treats for life," though we expect that means free treats for as long as customers continue their subscriptions.

Ingredients and Manufacturing Method

Smalls cat foods are largely made of human-grade meat and fish. The company enhances its recipes with fresh vegetables for their vitamin content and added nutrients to make sure cats receive optimum nutrition. The company sources its ingredients in the US and Canada. Ingredients come from farms that emphasize sustainability.

Cats don't really need carbohydrates. Hence, Smalls wet food recipes are grain-free. Freeze-dried foods do contain small amounts of carbohydrates to bind other ingredients together.

Taurine is a critical nutrient for cats and contributes to better vision, better digestion, and heart health. Smalls recipe contains enough taurine to exceed AAFCO standards. The company chooses some ingredients, such as chicken hearts, which may not appeal to us as humans, but contain significant amounts of taurine.

Smalls foods are cooked at low temperatures to better preserve their nutritional value. The company describes its manufacturing process simply as "chop, steam, freeze, ship."

Smalls Subscriptions and Pricing

New customers may not know what kind of cat food their cats need. To begin the purchase process, cat owners answer a brief questionnaire. The quiz takes about a minute. Questions are simple to answer. You don't have to have your cat's vet records handy. Just provide your cat's age, body style, and food preferences. Based on your answers, Smalls will recommend a menu. One of the most popular ways to start using Smalls is to order the company's sampler pack. Once your cat has picked some favorites, you can customize your order to feed your cat the menu that has proven most delicious.

You can also customize the quantity and frequency of your order. You can order a supply that will last between two and eight weeks, based on what's best for your schedule and budget. Orders are processed on Fridays and shipped the following week. The company updates you with an estimated delivery date. You'll also have time to make changes to your order.

Smalls reports that the average cost of a Smalls cat food diet is between $3 and $4 per day per cat. Your cat may eat more or less, however. So you'll learn with practice how much it costs to feed with Smalls and how often to place an order. Smalls cat food is considerably more expensive than traditional grocery store brands. It's up to you whether the benefits of feeding fresh food and the convenience of home delivery are a good value for your and your cat family.

Customer Service

Once you sign up for a Smalls subscription, you'll be assigned a cat concierge. He or she will check in with you a few days after you receive your first order to see how things are going. You can reach your cat concierge by texting the company at 503-487-4303 or sending an email to meow@smalls.com. The company's customer support team is available for consultation seven days a week.

Smalls Summed Up

Smalls offers a wide variety of cat food flavors and textures, so you can be sure your cat will love the food you offer. Smalls allows you to customize your orders based on your schedule, your budget, and your cat's culinary preferences. All in all, Smalls is a great choice for cat owners who believe that feeding fresh frozen or freeze-dried foods will help their cats live healthier and happier lives.
