Coterie is a managing general agency based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was founded in 2018 and is currently live in 50 states. It sells business insurance through its partnerships with A-rated insurers such as Greenlight RE and Benchmark Insurance Company. It is backed by VC's and insurers including The Hartford, Western & Southern Financial Group, Allos, and RPM Ventures.

Services and Features

Coterie offers a streamlined online quote tool that enables you to quickly identify the types of coverage that are relevant to your business and customize the policy limits to suit your needs and budget. Most of the information you need to complete the quote should be things you already know, like how long you've been in business and your annual revenue, so it only takes a few minutes to get results. After you've selected the types of coverage you want, Coterie will present you with a quote and you can choose to pay monthly or annually, though you don't get a discount for paying for the full policy term upfront. If you're satisfied with everything, you can enter your credit card information online and purchase your policy instantly. The whole process can be completed in less than 5 minutes.

Coverage

Coterie has three main coverage options. Coterie's Business Owner's Policy includes general liability and commercial property insurance that's designed for businesses generally with less than $10 million in sales and fewer than 50 employees (contractors must be less than $5 million in sales). Coterie’s general liability policy, which can be purchased separately, might be a more affordable option (for example if you don't have business property that could be damaged or stolen). Coterie's third coverage option is professional liability insurance. This is for service-based companies where an employee could be sued for making a mistake on the job that would lead to a professional malpractice claim.

Coterie does the basics well and offers business income insurance in the basic BOP coverage form to cover a loss of income if your business must shut down due to damage. However, it lacks data breach insurance, workers compensation coverage, and umbrella coverage. Not every business will need these, but you often find them with established business insurers. Coterie partners with several well-known insurance providers, though, so if you require some type of specialized coverage, it may be able to assist you if you reach out.

Coterie covers a wide range of businesses from lawyers and accountants to lawn care and acupuncturists. One of the first questions it asks you is what kind of business you own because it helps Coterie select the types of coverages that your business is likely to need. I am having an extremely difficult time with Coterie Insurance. I have been trying to file a claim with them for two weeks and so far they have failed to acknowledge my attempts to contact them. I tried filing online once and by phone twice. They will not return my phone calls even though I have left numerous messages. They have so far failed in every aspect of Service.

As an Independent Agent who is appointed to work with Coterie, I can attest their rates are great, BUT their service and support is the worst I've ever experienced. They say you can contact them by phone...but they never answer. They say they offer Live Chat. False. It's a ChatBot that provides nothing and just keeps asking the same question over and over. Prompt service and availability is vital to agents, as they too are servicing and being available to their clients. Unfortunately, when a carrier provides bad service or takes forever to process a policy change, it reflects directly back on the agent.
