The United States Geological Survey (USGS) concluded that there are about 20,000 earthquakes per year worldwide - approximately 55 per day-, and in the United States alone, there are about 2,000 earthquakes per year. State Farm stands out for two things: their superb customer service and the extra features that come with its earthquake policy. To evaluate State Farm’s customer support, we called them a total of ten times to inquire about their policies, and each time their representatives were very thorough explaining each policy feature carefully, always asking if we had any questions before proceeding further. Furthermore, they always asked if we wished for them to email us an immediate breakdown of the insurance quotes we requested, something that was hit or miss with many of the other companies we reviewed-in some occasions, companies took more than two hours to email a quote, or they reassured that they would email us back with the quote, but never did.  

For extra features, State Farm offers deductibles as low as 5% as standard, and you can opt to add debris removal and broken glass cleanup to your earthquake policy if you believe you’ll need it. They also offer a limited number of discounts, including multi-policy, claims-free, and loyalty discounts.

Best for Personal Property and Loss of Use Coverage

When paying out personal property claims that result from earthquake damage, it’s typical for companies to cap them at $150,000 if you paid for this amount. Nationwide goes further, not only capping personal property insurance at $200,000 but also offering the same coverage amounts for loss of use. Typically, the coverage cap for personal property and loss of use is separate and varies, so you’d have to keep in mind how much the company offers for each. This isn’t an issue with Nationwide, however, since r your personal belongings and your out-of-home expenses are covered equally if you need them.

Discounts are lacking when compared to other companies, however, as their website only shows eight: multi-policy, protective device, claims-free, home renovation credit, roof rating, home purchase, prior insurance, and gated community discounts.

Best for Policy Transparency

As we researched companies and their earthquake insurance policies, we were disappointed to see that almost none of the big brand names explained their policies on their website, so we had to inquire about policy specifics by phone. GeoVera Insurance was the exception, as their website has enough information for you to get a thorough understanding of how their policies work. GeoVera’s earthquake insurance uses a single limit policy for earthquake insurance, which means that instead of assigning separate coverage limits for dwelling, personal property, and loss of use, they assign a single, combined limit for all coverages. The downside is that, in most areas, the lowest deductible you can get is 10%, which is fairly high compared to other companies.

There are two coverage options for earthquake insurance: comprehensive and standard. Comprehensive protection covers your home, detached structures, personal property, and loss of use expenses. Their standard coverage is cheaper but less thorough, offering full protection only for your home while limiting coverage for personal property and loss of use. If you choose comprehensive coverage, you have the option to increase your deductible from 10 to up to 25%, while standard coverage limits your deductible to up to 15%. Having the option to change your deductible is great since high deductibles translate to cheaper premiums and vice versa. The biggest drawback for GeoVera is that it only offers its earthquake policies to four states: California, Oregon, and Washington.

Further Insight into Our Methodology

When we began researching the earthquake insurance world and its many companies, we thought it would be a straightforward journey: We would check company websites, look up their features, pros and cons, discounts, financial data, and so forth, and we would evaluate each company thoroughly based on these features. What we didn’t see coming, though, was how little information most companies had about their earthquake insurance on their websites. They either had vague information, or they purely focused on how-to guides on protecting yourself and your property from earthquakes. We thus had to call each company directly to inquire about their features, and even then, they were reluctant to provide the information if we didn’t request a quote. We, therefore, adapted our methodology to these facts, and after more than 100 hours of research, more than 40 sources studied, and 10 companies vetted, we settled on 3 key factors to evaluate: coverage and discounts, financial strength, and customer experience.


Coverage & Discounts

We checked what each company’s earthquake insurance policy covered and didn’t cover, as well as if there were any additional add-ons available for their earthquake insurance. Companies who had flexible premiums, extra add-ons, and more thorough coverage, including higher caps on personal property and loss of use protection, scored higher with us. We also checked for available discounts, and although we didn’t find as many related discounts to earthquake insurance, we found out that companies that offered earthquake insurance as an add-on could help you score great discounts if you bundle it with their homeowners. Thus, companies that had a large number of homeowner’s discounts scored higher with us.

If an earthquake ever damages or devastates your home, you really need to be sure that your insurer is capable of helping you pay for the damages. That’s why we made sure that the choices we picked were all financially sound. To do this, we checked independent financial rating websites like Standard and Poor’s, Moody’s, and A.M. Best.

What is earthquake insurance

Earthquake insurance is a form of insurance that protects your home and your personal property if an earthquake ever damages or destroys them. This type of property insurance isn’t a part of your regular homeowners, condominium or renters insurance, so it is offered by insurance companies either as an add-on to your homeowners insurance policy or as separate insurance from an alternate provider. Homeowners insurance can cover losses caused by a variety of natural and man-made disasters as long as it is specified in your policy, and these include fire or lightning, windstorms or hail, explosions, riot or civil commotion, damage caused by aircraft, damage caused by vehicles, theft, and even volcanic eruption, among others.

Surprisingly, homeowners insurance doesn’t cover the following four disasters: floods, earthquakes, sewer backup, and maintenance damage-meaning the lack of maintenance in your home, such as mold or insect infestation.  

Does earthquake insurance only cover damage from earthquakes? Well, yes, but it also provides specific features that aid you and your home’s protection. These include dwelling coverage, a policy that helps repair the physical structure of your home and all attached structures, such as a garage; personal property protection, which protects your TVs, computers, tablets, furniture, and other property inside your home; and it also pays for extra living expenses you and your family may need if you’re unable to live inside your home while it’s being repaired or rebuilt. In insurance terms, this is called “loss of use” protection. 

Earthquake insurance covers damages that resulted directly from an earthquake, but it does not cover damages from other events that the earthquake might cause, such as fires or floods. The following is a quick breakdown of what earthquake insurance does and doesn’t cover.

Do I need Earthquake Insurance?

If you live in a state or an area with high earthquake probabilities, earthquake insurance is a must. Not only will it pay for your home when disaster strikes, but it will also give you peace of mind for years to come, as repairing or rebuilding your entire home might be a task you wouldn’t normally be able to afford out of pocket. Unfortunately, living in a state with a high risk of earthquakes also means that the premiums you’ll pay can be way higher than in states with lesser probabilities. For example, in California, one of the states with the highest history of earthquakes, premiums range from $800 to $5,000 annually. With premiums so high in these places, getting earthquake insurance might seem like a fruitless endeavor, which is why less than 10% of homeowners in California have earthquake insurance. Is there a way to make earthquake insurance in these states cheaper? Well, through our research, we learned that the best way to reduce premium costs is to refrain from buying earthquake insurance as a separate policy, and instead opt to bundle it with your homeowners insurance. Not only can you get a reduced quote overall, but you will also benefit from other discounts that the company might offer. Nonetheless, always remember to review these premium costs with your insurer to verify that you’re indeed saving money and not spending more. However, this shouldn’t demotivate you if you live in an earthquake-prone state, as the price is well worth the end result: if a disaster ever strikes, you’ll be sure that you, your family, and your home will be taken care of.  

What about states that have lower chances of being struck by an earthquake? Well, if you live in a state with fewer probabilities of an earthquake, you could face two things: either your state won’t sell you earthquake insurance at all, or they will sell it to you at a more affordable price, at around $100 to $300 annually. If you favor peace of mind, spending a little extra for earthquake insurance would be a great idea, as it only takes one rough earthquake to potentially damage your home.

What are the states with higher chances of an earthquake, you might ask? Well, according to the 2008 United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Seismic Hazard Map, none of the 50 states are safe from an earthquake, but there are at least 16 states that have higher probabilities: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Conversely, there are eight states that have a very low earthquake risk: Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Finally, if you live anywhere near a fracking zone—even if you’re in a state that’s not naturally prone to seismic activity—you could experience an increased number of induced earthquakes, and you should also consider getting insurance. Induced seismicity has increased the chances of earthquakes in states like Oklahoma, causing even the 5.8 magnitude Pawnee earthquake in 2016.  The practice has increased throughout the years, so there is a chance that more earthquakes will be generated in the future due to fracking.

What to Watch Out for With Earthquake Insurance

Earthquake insurance deductibles can be more expensive than homeowners

When you set up a deductible with your homeowners insurance, you do so by agreeing on a dollar amount with your insurer. This is the amount of money you need to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. For example, if you choose a $1,000 deductible for your homeowners, and your insurer determines that your home has an insured loss of $15,000, then you’d have to pay $1,000 and the insurer would cover the remaining $14,000. This isn’t the case with earthquake insurance, as deductibles are calculated on a percentage of your home’s insured value instead, making them more expensive. For example, let’s say that you choose a 10% deductible for your earthquake policy, and your home is insured for $100,000. In the event of an earthquake, if you want your insurance to cover the damage costs, you’d first have to pay 10% of $100,000, which would be $10,000.

Deductible percentages vary per state and per insurance company, but they normally range from 10 to 25% of the coverage limit. Some companies offer deductibles as low as 5%, while others can be as high as 50%. It’s important that you and your insurer discuss the deductible amount that works best for you and your home. Higher deductibles can be great, since they translate to lower premiums, but if you’re unable to pay the high deductible that you and your insurer set, then your earthquake insurance would be useless. Why? Because you’d end up stuck paying an insurmountable amount before the insurance kicks in. If you can’t pay your deductible, your insurer won’t be able to help you with repair costs, so you’d be in trouble with or without insurance. 

Deductibles for dwelling and personal possession protection may differ

With earthquake insurance, companies can set different deductibles for repairing your home and for personal possessions. This means that, if your home is affected by an earthquake, you’d have to pay each deductible separately before the insurance covers the rest, which can leave a huge dent on your wallet. For example, say that an earthquake ruins your home and the personal property within, and you have two separate 10% deductibles for both your dwelling and your personal property. If the coverage limits of your home and your personal property are $100,000 and $50,000, respectively, and the total damage for your dwelling and personal property are $30,000 and $20,000, you would have to pay 10% of each, or $10,000 for dwelling and $5,000 for personal property first, totaling at $15,000. For this reason, you should always ask your insurer how your earthquake insurance deductibles are calculated, as this might help you save more in the end.  

Companies usually wait 30 to 60 days after an earthquake to offer earthquake insurance

The time to seek earthquake insurance should always be before an earthquake and not after. This is because, after an earthquake occurs, insurance companies wait around 30 to 60 days to offer insurance once more. The reason behind this is that, just like with a health insurance’s waiting period, this prevents customers from issuing false insurance claims. For example, say that an earthquake occurs, and your home is damaged, and you immediately seek earthquake insurance from a provider. If that waiting period wasn’t in place, you could easily file a claim to your insurer demanding reparations, even if the policy was bought after the earthquake. Setting a 30 to 60-day waiting period protects insurance providers from consumers who want to take advantage of these situations.

The magnitude of an earthquake doesn’t necessarily correlate to the costs of damages

When it comes to earthquakes, a higher magnitude might not translate directly to higher property losses overall. For example, in 1994, a 6.7 earthquake hit Northridge, Los Angeles, causing an estimated $23.2 billion in insured losses, while in 1906, a 7.9 earthquake hit San Francisco, California, causing only 1.7 billion.   

You might wonder, then, how are the magnitude and the total damage of your home interrelated? It all comes down to four characteristics: oscillation caused by the earthquake, frequency, duration, and building type/size. Earthquakes produce oscillations or repeated vibrations that turn into waves, which spread through the earth, creating the shaking commonly experienced during the event. But these vibrations come in varying amplitudes and frequencies, and depending on the size of the structure and the ground which is built on, low amplitude/high-frequency waves and high amplitude/low-frequency waves will create different reactions. For small buildings, earthquakes with an oscillation that last less than a second per wave will cause high amounts of damage to the structure, while taller buildings won’t even feel it. The same applies to taller buildings: higher oscillation periods will be catastrophic for taller buildings, but not for smaller homes.

Is earthquake insurance worth it?

Whether earthquake insurance is worth it or not will depend on the state you live in. If you’re in a state where there’s little to no earthquake activity, chances are insurance companies won’t even have earthquake insurance available. However, if you live in a state with a history of earthquakes, or where tremors are more common, getting this type of insurance would be a great investment, for it saves you from having to pay out of pocket if your home or personal property is damaged. However, earthquake insurance premiums on tremor-prone states can be very expensive, so if you’re interested in insuring your home, you can save by increasing your deductible and by bundling earthquake insurance with homeowners’. 


How much does earthquake insurance cost?

This will depend on the state you live in. States with a history of earthquakes will always have higher premiums, so they’ll be more expensive than states who suffer less from earthquakes. For example, in California, a state with a great history of earthquakes, the average premium cost of earthquake insurance ranges from $800 to $5,000 annually, while states with little seismic activity who have fewer earthquake cases can typically get earthquake insurance at around $300 per year.


How does the claim process work?

First, you should take pictures of the damage in your property and keep a record of these. You should also keep receipts for food and lodging if you must live elsewhere while your home is being repaired or rebuilt.

Next, you need to notify your insurance provider of the earthquake and report any visible damage. It’s important to remember that visible damage isn’t necessarily severe and that the most dangerous damages are those that aren’t typically seen, such as damage to the foundation of the home. Finally, you should schedule an appointment for a claims adjuster to inspect the damage to your home. The adjuster will provide an initial assessment of the damages, and if you disagree, you can try getting a second opinion through a licensed engineer or structural contractor, or through a public adjuster. To check for public insurance adjusters, you can inquire in your state’s department of insurance.


What is and isn’t covered in Earthquake Insurance?

Earthquake insurance covers the following: damages and losses to your home and attached buildings (such as a garage) caused by the earthquake, damages, and losses to personal property inside your home (such as laptops and furniture), and additional living expenses (ALE) if you and your family aren’t able to live inside the home while it’s being repaired. It does not usually cover floods, fires, sinkholes, landslides, or any other catastrophic side-effects that result from an earthquake. This is because homeowners insurance usually covers these disasters, although flood insurance is offered as a separate policy.
