Short-Term Health Insurance Plan Details

*For the purpose of this review, we requested a quote from UHOne.com, which is the main consumer-facing shopping website for Golden Rule’s short term insurance plans, for a 30-year-old male non-smoker from Georgia. Golden Rule notes that benefits may vary from state to state. Requesting a quote and viewing the plan brochure is strongly encouraged to see exactly which benefits and exclusions patients may be subject to.

Golden Rule offers several short-term health insurance plans, which are designed to fill in the gaps in coverage a person may have while he or she waits for the next open enrollment period. Patients are able to sign up for a short-term health insurance plan at any time, even outside of the open enrollment period. Patients can go to any doctor in one UnitedHealthcare’s doctor networks, which are available nationwide. Golden Rule short term insurance plans use the UnitedHealthcare Choice and the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus network of doctors. No referral is needed to visit a specialist, and no primary care physician (PCP) is required. Patients should note that visiting a non-network provider will incur a penalty of 25% of the expense, in addition to other penalties. Therefore, visiting network providers is encouraged.

Terms range from 30 days to less than 3 months. However, starting in October, Golden Rule will be offering short term insurance plans that can run 364 days a year. Patients select their term, deductible, and coinsurance. Once the deductible is met, the patient pays the coinsurance percentage while the insurance covers the remaining portion of the covered expense up to the lifetime maximum benefit.

There are three lifetime maximum benefit options: $250,000; $600,000; and $2 million. Depending on the option selected by the patient, there may be three or four plans available.

Patients may select the deductible type of their choice: Per Cause (deductible applied to each illness or injury) or Per Term (one deductible for the duration of the plan term). Deductible amounts are available between $1,000 and $12,500.

Depending on the plan type and tier, coinsurance options (meaning the amount that the insured person pays for their medical bill) can be as high as 40% or as low as 0%. With a 0% coinsurance, the patient would not pay anything for covered expenses.

Coinsurance out-of-pocket maximums, meaning the maximum amount a patient will pay, after the deductible, before the insurance covers 100% of covered expenses, range between $0 and $10,000.

Some plans establish a fixed copay amount for doctor's visits, while others establish that the amount to be paid is the coinsurance percentage selected after the deductible is met. Other copays apply to urgent care center visits, emergency room care, outpatient procedures, and inpatient hospital services.

Certain plans cover prescription drugs up to $3,000, and patients pay the coinsurance after the deductible is met. Others only provide a discount card which saves patients an average of 20% on prescription drugs.

An additional benefit that may be selected is a Supplemental Accident Benefit, which will help the patient cover their expenses if they suffer an accident-related injury. The benefit amounts range from $1,000 to $12,500.

I brought a short term policy from Golden Rule because it was under the United Health Care umbrella. The policy I brought was useless. It did not cover annual doctors visit, apparently I misread the documents. Also, the dental plan paid $22.00 of a $200.00 bill. So the policies was no use to me so l cancelled them. One year to age 65 , I can’t wait.

Golden Rule is not just terrible insurance but they will waste your time pretending to be real. They claim to be part of United Healthcare. If they are, I would be shocked. They will purposefully send documents to your old address, refuse to change your address, hang up on you, delete call records, and then refuse to pay for an accident because your “policy had lapsed”. I spent 4 months calling to see what they were before I finally told the bank the monthly charges must be fraudulent. Finally at that point, they started answering my calls. Then I spent a total of about 8 hours on the phone with them, where they made my husband stop work every time to verify that I could call for him, and... Read More

GOLDEN RULE - A TOTAL RIP OFF - this company increased our monthly insurance costs by $300 per month with a couple of months left before my wife and I would start medicare coverage, we had nowhere else to go, so they took this unfair action. Additionally they pay for nothing. They refused to cover a Colonoscopy and refused to cover the cost of a Mammogram, in contrast to all health care insurance experience we've ever had. They even refused to cover the cost of flu shot, to the surprise of the provider... they said they've never seen anything like it. DON'T USE GOLDEN RULE.

Golden Rule/United is a joke and thieves!! My policy increased in two years from $633.00 to $938.00. Insurance being used for annual care only! DO NOT USE THEM!!! They are terrible.

They take your money and do NOT cover anything. Took them 6 months to decline paying for my cancer treatments. TOTAL DIRTBAGS!

I recently signed up for UnitedHealthOne - Golden Rule Insurance. First I couldn't register my policy. I tried for almost a week. I called and spoke to 3 people. 1st person said he was going to assist me in registering and that I would get an email, but that never happened. 2nd person told me that the 1st person sent the request to IT and I should wait for a few days to hear from IT. 3rd person stated that she can only route the request to IT and because I can't register she can't trouble shoot my request. I am going to cancel this policy and find something else. Believe or not my policy starts on July 1, yet they've taken a payment a few weeks ago. I've never experienced anything like... Read More

Horrible. Complete waste of money. Covered nothing towards annual blood work needed for prescription renewal and health condition. It didn't even cover the Primary Care doctor visit. Worthless.

Stay away from this company! Because they are affiliated with UnitedHealthcare, I would stay away from them as well.

We bought a short-term medical gap insurance from Golden Rule. At one point we made a very costly mistake with our policy. I wrote to Golden Rule, and they made an exception for us that saved us hundreds of dollars. Frankly, I did not expect that to happen!

Got this insurance for my wife since insurance through work only covers me. Got the premium elite plan since that closely resembled the plan we had through my last job. She has severe anxiety and goes to counseling and receives medication to help her get through each day without having a breakdown. With this insurance not only is the counseling not covered the medication isn't covered either, this insurance is effectively useless.

I used United Health One (Golden Rule) as a "gapper" policy to cover me between my COBRA and Medicare. I knew it wouldn't cover pre-existing conditions and had coverage limits. BUT. I slipped on the ice and needed (6) x-rays. NOT COVERED. My out of pocket was $2400. Unbelievable. They'll happily take your money, but when you need them you are SOL.

In a world where there are so many checks and balances put in place to verify a patient is the correct patient. It baffles me how erroneous and incoherent United Healthcare is regarding their record keeping of their members. For 5 years my son has always had his middle name on his insurance card. He and his Grandfather share the same first and last name. However, that is where the similarities end. They have different birthdays, different middle names, and obviously different social security numbers. Despite all these differences UHC since March 2020 has been denying my son’s claims stating that he has another insurance. (Coincidentally its another UHC plan) If SOMEONE would of fact... Terrible health insurance. The United HealthCare name is misleading. We had UHC insurance for years and it was terrific. But this is United HealthOne, which is owned by UHC, but is worthless insurance. The premiums are cheaper for UHOne, and there's a reason: when you need them to pay your medical bills, they don't. Or if they do pay, it's just a fraction of the bill they pay, leaving you up the creek.

Awful! They don't cover needed medications and insist on prior authorizations. They said I can pay $3800 for a 90 day supply of the kind of insulin my son needs, but they are not going to cover it. HORRIBLE! The head honcho makes over 18 million dollars annually and they can't cover my son's insulin! PATHETIC! a money making venture and they could care less about the patients!
