Understanding your options
Which type of moving service is best for your move?
There are two types of moving companies — carriers and brokers. Both are FMCSA-licensed, but they operate differently. Here's how to tell them apart.
Moving Carrier
Owns its trucks, employs its own crews
The same company that gives you the quote is the one that shows up, loads, transports, and delivers your belongings — no hand-offs, no third parties.
One company handles everything, start to finish
Full accountability — you know exactly who is responsible
Greater control over your crew and schedule
Best for: Maximum control and a single point of accountability.
Moving Broker
Coordinates your move through vetted carriers
Manages planning, support, and billing while a licensed carrier handles the actual transport. One point of contact, multiple carriers competing for your business.
Access to a network of pre-vetted, licensed carriers
Often more competitive pricing than going direct
Single coordinator manages everything on your behalf
Best for: Competitive pricing and the convenience of a single point of contact.

How Moving Estimates Work (And How to Lock In Your Price)
The type of estimate you accept directly affects how much you'll pay on moving day — and how predictable that number will be.
Binding estimate
Your price is locked in
Usually provided after an in-home survey. The company agrees not to charge more than the quoted total at delivery — unless you add services on moving day, like packing.
Non-binding estimate
Final cost set on the day
Typically lower upfront, but the final bill is calculated after your items are loaded and weighed. It can come in cheaper — but offers less price predictability.
⚠ Know the 110% Rule before you sign
Federal law protects consumers on non-binding interstate moves: the company cannot collect more than 110% of the estimate at delivery. They have 30 days to bill any remaining balance — after 30 days, those excess charges are legally forfeit. This rule applies only to non-binding estimates and interstate moves.

How to Compare Moving Quotes Like a Pro
The lowest number isn't always the best deal. Check these six things across every quote.
What's included?
Ask each company to itemize transport, labor, packing materials, and surcharges so you're comparing apples to apples.
Binding or non-binding?
Binding gives you price certainty — the number on paper is the number you pay. If a quote is non-binding, ask if you can upgrade.
Payment schedule?
Most reputable movers collect 10–25% at booking and the balance at delivery. A deposit over 50% upfront is worth a closer look.
Add-on fees?
Long-carry charges, stair fees, elevator fees, and shuttle service are standard line items. Ask about all of them upfront so there are no day-of surprises.
Cancellation policy
Life happens. Know the rescheduling window and any fees before you commit — most good movers offer a reasonable cancellation policy.
Insurance & liability coverage
Understand the base policy and whether extra protection is available — especially for high-value or irreplaceable items.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Most long-distance moves cost between $2,400 and $8,000 depending on home size, distance, and services included. Studios under 1,000 miles can be as low as $1,200; large homes going cross-country can exceed $10,000. The best way to get an accurate number is to request binding quotes from 2–3 companies on this page.
