Home Chef is a food and beverage company that offers a variety of culinary and recipe options to its clients. The company delivers freshly portioned ingredients and step-by-step recipes that allows customers to experience quality meals right in the comfort of their own home.

About Home Chef

Home Chef aims to allow their customers experience gourmet dinner without consuming too much time preparing and shopping for ingredients. They provide a variety of chef-designed meals that can be prepared in less than 30 minutes. New meals are displayed weekly on their website that has different options available such as nut-free, vegetarian, soy-free, low carb, and gluten-free.

Chefs from Home Chef create easy-to-follow recipes with the use of fresh and locally sourced ingredients. As a customer sets their profile, Home Chef will offer weekly meal suggestions based on their preferences. The ingredients are placed in a recyclable box that is insulated to keep the contents fresh. Beginners also do not have to worry about the recipes because each dish is designed to be easily cooked by amateurs.

A flexible subscription plan is also provided for customers to enable them change their delivery date and adjust the number of meals or servings that they want to receive. Consumers can also skip a week or pause their subscription by simply logging on to their account.

Meal Subscription Services

Home Chef’s subscription service lets customers choose their favorite recipes from their weekly menus. You can select how many meals per week you wish to receive, as well as the number of servings and type of ingredients included for the preparation of your dish. Home Chef also has the following additional options to its subscription services:

1.) Oven Ready: On the core homechef.com site, the company has added an Oven Ready meal to every menu (and will be adding more Oven Ready meals soon).  This is in addition to the usual assortment of meals Home Chef serves.

Oven Ready meals are no-prep, no-mess (no dishes!).  Home Chef sends customers everything they need to make a meal including the cooking tray.  This is a very unique offering in the meal kit space.  An example of an Oven Ready meal: 

 

2.) Fresh & Easy: Recently, Home Chef launched Fresh & Easy as a sub-brand.  This plan is dedicated to Oven-Ready, Grill-Ready and Dinner Salads (it does not include traditional Home Chef meals).

3.) Customize It: Home Chef customers can swap or upgrade proteins in many meals now (i.e. want steak tacos instead of chicken, that's easy!). More information.

How Much Does It Cost You?

Home Chef offers simple pricing to all their meals. Meals start at $7.99 per serving, while featured premium dishes are sold at a market price. Modifying your meals beyond the base offerings may also impact your plan's pricing.

Shipping and Delivery

Home Chef gives free delivery service for orders over $40 and a $10 shipping fee for orders less than $40. The provider delivers weekly from Tuesday through Friday. Customers can choose the day which is most convenient for them to receive the package. Delivery day options also vary on the customer’s state of residence.

I have been using Home Chef for a few years and love the variety. The portions are more than adequate and the directions are easy to follow. My only complaint is with the vendor they use for shrimp. They do not vacuum seal and the bags almost always leak -- YUK! Last summer due to shipping delays, the ice packs would come completely melted, so I stopped delivery for a few months during the hot weather. I believe the problem was with FedEx, not Home Chef and I am now getting them on time and adequately cooled.

The "oven ready" meals were disappointing. They are far from oven ready. The instructions have you taking out certain ingredients and cooking the others first. One even told me to wash my broccoli. I bought these thinking they were a good fit for me, a busy person, who works back to back twelve hour shifts. There is not way I could take one of these meals with me without previous prepping which defeats the whole purpose!

They are unable to deliver the meal kits on time. First order delayed by FedEx, over a week late. Food was spoiled and had to be discarded.

I have been absolutely disappointed with the ON TRAC delivery service used by Home Chef. I live in Seattle and the shipments originate in California (usually Ontario). My delivery day is Thursday. My family orders veggie and FISH meals. Several times, the food took FIVE DAYS on the road to arrive! FISH SHOULD NOT BE RIDING AROUND IN A TRUCK OR PARKED IN A WAREHOUSE FOR FIVE DAYS!! As for the ice packs, the most recent order arrived FIVE days after dispatch, and contained ONE ice pack......for FISH?! ON TRAC does not deliver on weekends. I just started receiving Home Chef deliveries and I am so happy I started. I always loved cooking but did not know what I was doing. Plus I never had all the ingredients to be successful. I am in love with cooking again. We were getting take out or going to happy hour (save money) but the Home Chef has saved the day. I love all the food and it is easy and everything comes out perfect. The food is so fresh, fresher than I can get in local grocery store. I did have one issue and my account was credited the same day. It really was my problem I did not know what I was doing the 1st time I ordered. Thank you Home Chef.

I have had 3 boxes not show up. I have been refunded and am now asking to be refunded to my bank account. They have said they are having some sort of shipping problem but the box before the first didn't show up was 2 days late. Their boxes are intended to be able to be up to one day late but no more than without risking spoiling food. I am now going to have to find another meal delivery service that meets my needs. Hello Fresh was good but after being a customer for a few months the service diminished significantly. I hope that Home Chef gets their lives together so I can get the food I want on time (or at all) I suspended my deliveries until January hoping that will give us time.

Home Chef has problems with their SHIPPER (late, rotted food, never showing up). Food is good, but not for a hungry family. One meal, aka 2 servings, will feed one person. So if you do order, double it up and there will be good for 2.

I agree with "Kay R". Last week we did not get our meals at all and this week, they were a day late and the ice packs were melted. The food was lukewarm! Will have to throw it all out!

The food is fine, it’s the delivery service!!!! ON TRAC is awful. I am having to go find the food after it is delivered…to someone else’s house. Fire On Trac and lHome Chef would be so much better!! I will probably have to use another company because of the terrible delivery service. What does it take to get them to listen?!

I have relied on Home Chef and HelloFresh for the last 4 years to feed my husband and myself. Both are excellent services. Home Chef has better quality meats and simpler recipes than HelloFresh however. Home Chef also allows for protein substitutions which I particularly like. Home Chef also has fresh ahi tuna as a regular choice these days and I love that. They also recently had a lamb chop option. Since meat is important to us, the choices available through Home Chef are particularly appealing. HelloFresh, however, has duck regularly so I must continue to use them as well. . I was checking out the site and left without buying OR so I thought. I was notified Saturday July 3 that my order was being delivered Tuesday July 6. Being a holiday weekend I could not speak to anyone. This morning 7/6 I called the company. Of course I was told that I had an account with them. My “delivery “ came today 7/6 It consists of food I must cook using 3-5 pans per meal for food I would never have ordered. As a retiree with some disability I can not afford the price nor can I cook it. Very bad news I wouldn’t give it even a half star but that’s as low as I can rate it.

We have been using Home Chef three times a week and we love it! We are retired and find that these meals are perfect for us. They give you all the ingredients you need to make delicious meals. Haven't had a bad meal yet. As far as the price, it is cheaper than eating out in a restaurant, which would be our other choice. I hate cooking but this service makes it so easy for me with their detailed instructions. We would highly recommend.

My husband and I HAD been using Home Chef for a year, but just cancelled our service. The service started off great even when the recipes started getting remarkably similar and the vegetable side was too often squash. Over the last few months, I found myself contacting them at least once or twice a month with issues that they don’t seem to care about. Due to the lack of care when packing our box, too often was there a puncture or tear in a package of meat causing blood or goo to get all over everything. We ordered these meals with one goal in mind - to eat better. Now let me tell you what these meals have actually done: we cook together after 35 years of marriage; we both have lost weight; and we have never, ever, including all our travels to foreign countries eaten such amazingly, delicious, creative, mouth watering meals! The food is fresh, ample and top quality - so much so we have ordered new appliances to continue our journey with Home Chef cooking! Home Chef does not disappoint.

Have been loyal clients for more than 2 years. Prior used Hello Fresh for 3 years. Your sauces make the meal. Yesterday we received our meals for the week. All meals were with chicken. I was very surprised by this. We will order our meals going forward. I have a feeling due to the holiday meals were packed by temps. Just a note to advise you of our disappointment. Also the meals arrived on Tuesday and Thursdays are our delivery day. We left Hello Fresh because they weren’t consistent. TY

Home chef food is good, BUT it is very hard to cancel your account or delay orders when you go on extended vacations. We have experience multiple times when we postponed our order due to vacations and THEY still kept shipping the weekly food order resulting in food sitting on our door step rotting away. We recommend not ordering on their program. Go to Kroger and pick up home chef meals when you want their food.

Ha! Any food provider so unconcerned about carcinogens induced in the heated foods they serve - place slow cooker food in a soft plastic liner to cook for hours???!!! - has RED FLAGS all over their lying faces! Then they fail to list each ingredient and condiment content, some obviously with synthetic origins, and known carcinogenic properties!

I have been a home chef customer since 2017 The meals are great but lately the delivery service is not on time and my last delivery has not been delivered yet it should have been here yesterday the food is probably no good at this stage I have tried tracking the delivery on fedex but it does not have updating tracking it just says delivery pending even though it was out for delivery yesterday very disappointed

I have loved Home Chef meals for the past 2 years. Food is delicious. the problem is that for the past 2 weeks deliveries have been 2-3 days late. By the time food arrives 2-3 days after the promised and expected delivery date- ice packs have melted and meat and seafood are not at the safe temperature to consume. I have complained about these delays to the Home Chef customer support- no explanations. They did refund one of the late meals, but for the last meal they refunded only $40 for $285 order.

I have had several shipments from Home Chef and there has been poor quality produce in every box. At first I thought maybe it was just that the shipping service had mishandled the package. But that turned out not to be the case. I have been sent cauliflower that had a strong odor and turning brown, bruised pablano peppers, damaged zucchini on two occasions, and wilted, browning green onions. Received my first order from Home Chef last week. Prepared two of the three meals: Shrimp Fra Diavolo and Four Cheese Baked Ziti. Both were delicious and very generous portions. Love the instruction sheet which goes into a folder. Info is complete, including, nutrition info. I checked the products separately and they are spot on. Box was cold when it arrived. So far great. Also, for what you are getting they are reasonably priced.
