Speed Learning Languages Review

Speed Learning Languages is based on a foreign language learning program developed by the US government. This was developed to train diplomats and government employees including the US military.

This is a course as its name implies aims to help people acquire a foreign language easily and quickly.

What's included?

Speed is the keyword and in this case is close to a hundred hours of audio lessons. Yes, the course is spread through four levels of learning with each level spread through a couple of hours of audio.

It doesn’t have that interactive appeal which feels outdated compared to other language learning courses today.

The course is separated into four levels and is available separately or as a package. Level 1+2 goes for $197 and Level 3+4 are similarly priced. Level 1+2+3+4 along with 1 book of phonology and 8 hours of audio phonology is priced at $394.

How does it work?

You must love this type of learning if you’re planning to listen to close to a hundred hours of audio. This type of presentation is simply boring. It does provide you with a transcript which wouldn’t be much help if you’re a visual learner.

The course is divided into 4 levels with a total of 24 units and 97 hours of audio. Lessons are composed of dialogues where you are introduced to simple conversations.

Costs

For a course that is heavily based on audio, its $197 price tag seems to be too costly. Well, after being in the market for so long at least they could have recovered some of the developmental costs. After all how much does it cost to copy data on a CD?

In a learning environment where simply strapping an earphone and listing to hours of audio is a bit outdated, the guys behind Speed Learning Languages could have spent more effort in getting a few more visuals into their products.

This might have worked in the past but with the amount of technology available, having the course in a more interactive atmosphere could help new students especially the young learners.

Bottom Line

Speed Learning Languages focuses as its name implies focuses on “speed.” I just can’t help but feel that the course was hurtling me towards a fixed set of goals without considering if I was able to digest the lesson.

It does seem boring and repetitive at times which only makes the experience more frustrating.

Speed Learning Language requires a lot of focus and concentration which hours of audio wouldn’t do. There are simply more courses that offer much more at a similar price.

I already speak German at the B1 level and am working toward my B2 certification. While SLLL is based up traditional methods of learning a language, there are a few problems with the German language module. 1) The voice recordings are of a poor quality and often do not allow enough time for the user to respond. 2) Some of the vocabulary words are dated (read old fashion). 3) The provided PDFs were either machine generated, or whoever typed them knew NOTHING about the German Language. Now having said that, one of the things that SLLL does that I have not seen in other language learning packages is provide in depth reading comprehension exercises. This is accomplished via the use... Read More

I‘ve used SLLL and it’s very effective for learning some basics. It’s easy to use in the car. 5 minutes. Or 30 min.

While SLL might be right for some, it's strictly audio format is considered a daunting task for most to sit through. Coupled with other learning software it may be worthwhile, but alone, it leaves a lot to be desired.
