Overall Rating: 3.9 / 5 (Very good)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 3.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 4 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I never had pet insurance before. When I decided I was ready to start a new canine family, insurance was definitely going to be a member. After adopting my third dog, I started researching pet insurance companies. I'm so glad I did because it led me to Healthy Paws. Their high ratings are completely justified. My dogs are young. My oldest just turned four, the middle guy just turned two and the baby just turned one. I got the insurance about a year ago (after adopting the youngest pup) just in case something happened to any of them. I never thought I'd be utilizing it so soon. Just recently, my 2y/o needed vet care for a GI issue. Shortly after that, my 1y/o became violently ill... Read More

Being a new pet parent can be difficult, wondering what I should be doing, what is the best thing for the new four legged little one. I was in the same situation but the first thing I ever did, was find an insurance company that would be there when I need them, and after researching I discovered that Healthy Paws was the best option for my little girl. One of the best things that I love about Healthy Paws is immediately with their mobile app, I can submit my claim and less than a day the claim is process. Staff is very friendly and caring, Vera's health and concern is always a priority and as a pet parent that is very satisfying to know. Best of all when she became ill, I was assured... Read More

I haven't been a customer long but I am so glad I chose them for my pet insurance. My husky is almost 8 months old and thinks she can eat anything. Healthy Paws was quick to respond to my questions and payout on reimbursements. I even received a personalized email from them checking to see how she was doing. I absolutely love this company. I wish my insurance company was as helpful. #customerforlife

We purchased coverage for our Burnie, a GSD in June 2015. He was 8 weeks old. I did extensive research and chose Healthy Paws very carefully. I am soooo happy with my choice. Unfortunately Burnie has had several major issues including an auto immune disease diagnosed recently. We are so greatful to Healthy Paws! They helped us pay a few big claims (90 percent coverage) we would not have been able to afford otherwise. The staff of the company is very quick to process claims and they always follow up with us to check on how Burnie is doing. We are do greatful ! Thank you for helping us take care of our beloved boy!

We've had our pup for almost two years now and purchased Healthy Paws Pet Insurance one year ago. Though she is still healthy and well, she is an active and crazy pup and I'm sorry to say we have had many high-dollar claims, including a $6,000+ surgery. We are continually surprised by Healthy Paws prompt, compassionate, and utterly stellar service. Claims paid quickly, never an issue. Terrific company. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Healthy Paws has been wonderful! I have a French Bulldog and got pet insurance when he was less than a year old. FRENCH BULLDOGS NEED PET INSURANCE! He is a healthy little guy but gets into everything! I did my research on Pet Insurance companies reading about customer reviews and Healthy Paws sounded like the safest bet. Gary recently ended up in the ER and our bill was very scary. I was so afraid that Healthy Paws would refuse the bill for some unknown reason. However, they were quick to respond. They answered the phone every time I called to check on the status of the claim. They reimbursed me within 2 weeks and even sent me an email checking on his status afterwards. I give... Read More

I am so happy that I enrolled my dog in Healthy Paws pet insurance. I have had Healthy Paws pet insurance for the past two years for my Labrador. Recently my dog ate a rock and had to have surgery to remove the rock. Healthy Paws was easily accessible when I called asking if this surgery would be covered. Healthy Paws processed the vet bills within two days - the bills were easily uploaded through the Healthy Paws app. They sent me emails to let me know what my plan would pay out, and have sent me reimbursement. They even contacted me to see how my dog was recovering. Healthy Paws pet insurance is wonderful. I recommend this pet insurance to all my family and friends.

I would never again consider owning a dog without the coverage of Healthy Paws Insurance. I never want to be in a situation to have to make a decision due to cost. With Healty Paws you have the piece of mind to make all the right decisions. I'm also happy to pay the monthly payment because they are a foundation as well and the money goes to helping other animals. Easy to submit a claim with excellent communication. Riembursement is quick so you can free yourself to take care of your babies. Thank you so much Healthy Paws.
