Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I've had Healthy Paws for my cat Figgy since 2017. Before I adopted her, I researched various options and felt healthy paws was the easiest for me to understand and communicated with online. They've helped with unexpected pet bills and in the five years with them my monthly rate has only increased by $10. Healthy Paws is amazing!

Supported me a lot during this time when my cat had the bad anemia and needed to have blood transfusion as well as hospitalization. They proceed the claims very fast and ensure the 80% coverage with a reasonable deductible

Unfortunately my fur baby was diagnosed with lymphoma at only 4 1/2 years old. Healthy Paws insurance made it possible for me to give her the best chemotherapy program that will hopefully give us many more years. Don’t wait— get insurance for your puppy, and get Healthy Paws. Their claims are easy to submit, the coverage is great (70 percent!), and the payments are literally deposited directly in my checking account within a week. AND, they send emails of support. Amazing. I am a HUGE fan of Healthy Paws 🐾💜

Terrible experience. Our cat got diagnosed with FIP a week after our coverage started. They denied our claim for the very expensive treatment because it was not FDA approved, but our vet prescribed. They told us they would review since Trupanion covers the treatment. After a month they denied it again and then said that because our cat went to the ER two weeks before her diagnosis for eating yarn, that her FIP was a preexisting condition and they would no longer be covering anything related to it. We never filed a claim for anything that happened prior to our coverage period. Do yourself a favor and headache and go elsewhere. They don’t listen and will just send you the same automated... Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver in managing the care of my two male dogs. One has a chronic illness which requires ongoing medical care and Healthy Paws allows me to care for my dog in the manner he needs not just in the manner in which I can afford. Customer service is outstanding and reimbursement is quick and simple.

I want to thank Healthy Paws for helping relieve the financial pain! I have had policies on each of my 10yo Border Terriers since they were puppies! Surgery was recently needed for Riley and was so much more extensive thanI had ever assumed it would be. Healthy Paws made it 'pawsible' for her to have everything she needed to be healthy again. It would have been nearly impossible for me to have had to manage these issues without my policy. Claims are easy to submit. Reimbursements are completed within a few days. Customer service is great! I know now, that I can handle whatever it takes to keep my girls medically sound as long as Healthy Paws is in my corner. LR 9/11/24

I signed up for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance when my Ellie was a puppy. I never thought about pet insurance before until someone recommended it to me. Boy, was that the best recommendation for my Ellie's life. At 2 years old, she started showing signs of major health issues. She had 2 surgeries, has been diagnosed with 3 chronic health issues, and 6 medications daily for the past 10+ years. Healthy Paws has been a life-saver for Ellie. Had we not had this insurance, I'm not sure if Ellie would have lived this long a life. She is 12 now and we just found out she has cancer. Again, we know that Healthy Paws will help us through these next few months with her cancer treatments. I... Read More

My poor pup had a life threatening twisted colon and the surgery was going to cost between 5 and 6 thousand dollars. Knowing I had healthy paws insurance made the decision easy. The surgery was done and Remi is doing well. The bill was $6,000 and we were praying healthy paws was as good a company as we had heard from our vet. I submitted pictures of the bills and a response from them stated they would review the claim and get back to us. Two days later we were notified Healthy Paws would pay the %80 of the bill minus the $250 deductible. Four days later I received checks totalling $4,700. I used to question the monthly premium for the last 4 years but no more. Good company to protect your... Read More

To say that HealthyPaws Pet Insurance is a great company is quite an understatement. By what they offer, they have allowed our Golden Retriever, Breach, to have more good days even in the face of a cancer diagnosis. Through their expeditious handling of the claims that we have submitted, we have not incurred as much financial hardship as we would have without pet insurance. I shiver at the thought of any family having to trudge through the mire of canine cancer without pet insurance. Many times we have submitted claims and within 24 hours we received an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) and the reimbursement soon thereafter. Our family is under no illusion that Breach will make a full... Read More
