Banfield Pet Hospital is a nationwide network of over 900 pet hospitals that offers an Optimum Wellness plan instead of traditional accident and illness pet insurance.

The plan offers in hospital services designed to diagnose, treat and prevent future medical conditions.

These include head to tail exams, nutritional consultations, and dental care.

Overall Rating: 2.3 / 5 (Average)

Banfield Pet Hospital offers an "Optimum Wellness Plan" which allows unlimited wellness visits to any of the numerous nationwide Banfield facilities.

This is a pro-active approach to identify potential problems in your dog or cat before they start.

This is indeed a great idea, but seeing as no one can predict a serious accident, at least an accident-only plan is warranted.

And since Banfield does not provide this, you'll have to get a separate plan from another carrier.

Banfield Pet Hospital Coverage

Coverage - 2.5 / 5

Banfield Pet Hospital does not offer pet insurance rather an "Optimum Wellness Plan."

This is a preventative program that covers your dog or cat for head-to-tail exams, vaccines, early screening diagnostics, consultations for proper nutrition, and dental care at any of the more than 900 Banfield locations across the US and Puerto Rico.

The wellness coverage is unparalleled protection, and also includes unlimited office visits.

However, it can run around the same price as comprehensive accident and illness policies from pet insurance providers.

Banfield operates 3 levels of wellness coverage.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 2 / 5

Similarly there is no reimbursement percentage as this is not pet insurance.

Your Banfield discount membership entitles you to 100% coverage of all the routine and preventative care associated with your plan level.

Deductibles - 3.5 / 5

There are no deductibles associated with care under Banfield's Optimum Wellness Plan, just a membership fee.

All procedures are covered 100% depending on your membership level.

Pricing: How much does Banfield Pet Hospital cost?

Cost - 2 / 5

Banfield Optimum Wellness Plans are, by and large, a little less expensive that fully comprehensive pet insurance plans that do not include wellness.

A Banfield plan may be an ideal addition to an accident only plan from another provider in order to ensure complete coverage.

What's more, it is significantly more convenient than reimbursement-model wellness plans as they will have all your info at the hospital of your choice and there will be no claim process.

I paid for the wellness plan for my dog and cat. Had to wait 3 months for the tartar "to build up" before they would clean my dogs teeth. Then after they cleaned them they still had tartar on them. My dog was puking daily and the vet after multiple visits couldn't tell me why. Just gave me pills to give him. Turned out to be the food. Tried to cancel service and they wouldn't so i cancelled the card on file and they continued to bill me for a year.

Banfield rips off their customers. Two months ago, I took my cats for a physical. At this visit, they were given rabies vaccines and a clear bill of health. Now, I need to place them for 2 days at the Petsmart Pet Hotel in the same location as Banfield and because the doctor that saw them (of which I did not choose) is on vacation, I need to bring them in and pay $170.00 just so that another doctor can give them a clean bill of health. It is much better to go to a private veterinarian than waste your time or money on this rip off institution. By the way, the location I am referring to is in NYC on East 117th Street.

I have had Banfield for a few years now. This seem to be great in the beginning. Walk-ins were welcomed and I wasn't paying an arm and a leg for service. I find that they have switched tactics. I can't remember the last time I went in there for a routine checkup where they were not trying to charge me for something. Almost as if they force the purchase by "highly suggesting" that you have this item for your pet. Lots of unnecessary pressure to make more purchases. I pay the highest premiums and yet I have to wait a month to be seen only to pay more after the visit for somethings I don't need. Example: A cone for my dog that comes off that was $20. I have been back and forth with... Read More

My dog was put to sleep last week at Banfield. I assumed they would notify the wellness program but knew I should call as well. This is my second pet who had the wellness program. I called yesterday, was on hold a very long time then told to call another number. When I got through I was told that I still owed a monthly charge for the next month due to the amount of services I used, I was told rather condescendingly that this "is not an insurance program" and that the payments are over time for services I used. I am unclear on this concept as I pay a balance every time I am at the vet for services given. I receive an average of 8 sheets of paper with the amount I saved due to the wellness... Read More

It has become very difficult at the Asheville hBanfields to get a sick dog or cat seen the same day. Simetimes, they will let you drop off the dog and they will "work it in" that day. Other times, I have been offered a "drop off -work in" for the next day. If your pet is not able to wait, you have to take it to the animal emergency hospital. The care there is good but very expensive. I love our Banfield get when we do get to see her.

he staff at front desk at Jackson,MS location is very rude and unprofessional. Got a call for appointment scheduled and the person mentioned that the appointment was scheduled for today instead of tomorrow. I was surprised but quickly changed my plans and took the pet there. They refused to accept the pet and did not accept the mistake they made in scheduling. I was delayed by more than hour at work and had to drive extra 45 miles just because of this miscommunication. The least they could do is keep the pet (who is on their Early Care Plus plan) for few hours so that I could report for work and pick during lunch. Very unsatisfied. When I tried to cancel the plan, after half an hour... Read More

DO NOT USE IF YOU NEED TO FLY PETS IN CARGO BELOW 45 DEGREES OUTSIDE! They are not willing to write any form of documentation to allow pets to fly in temperatures below 45 degrees on airlines. We paid for the banfield pet service for 3 years (20/month) without ever needing it really... when the time comes to need them, a few days before we move... they let you down. We are now at risk of having to leave our pets behind while moving, because they are unwilling to meet airline regulations for flying! Glad I spent thousands dollars over the years for a service thinking our pets were in good hands -- to find out Banfield doesn't support pets flying on airlines! Terrible terrible... Read More

Wow, I will never use this service again. Ive paid for this "Wellness program" for 9 years, and I just had to put my dog down 3 days ago. I called to cancel the program, and was told that I still owe 3 more months of payments. WHAT?!?! This was never explained to me 9 years ago when I signed up. Since I took him for his shots THREE days before he was put down, I still owe them????? They are the WORST. STAY AWAY

As a result of the incompetent staff (the vet), my 5 year old bull mastiff is dead...They killed her by mismanagement of her diagnosis. They try to suck you out of money charging you for services not covered in the wellness plan. They don't listen to your concerns and think they are doing you a favor. By the time I took my dog to a real veterinarian, they informed me it was too late. Please take your beloved pet to a real vet...not a revolving door pet cemetery
