Established in 2015 and based in New York, Lemonade is an insurance company with a socially-conscious agenda. It operates as a Benefit Corporation and if its premium-generated earnings surpass a previously established amount, the excess is donated to causes approved by the company's policyholders. Lemonade offers homeowners, renters, and pet insurance.

Overall Rating: 4 / 5 (Very good)

Lemonade Pet Insurance follows the operational philosophy of its sister services, Lemonade Home Insurance and Lemonade Renters Insurance, offering pet insurance at an affordable price without skimping on the coverage. The company also offers discounts to customers who bundle pet policies with renter's or homeowner's coverage.

Lemonade's policies are available to review on the company's website. They are less jargon-y and simpler to understand than many other insurance policies.

One of the company’s strengths is the Lemonade Insurance app, which allows policyholders to easily submit a claim and have the reimbursement promptly deposited into their bank account. The app offers policy holders the ability to chat live with medical experts.

Lemonade's website is heavy on animation but light on information in some areas. However, pet owners who are interested in purchasing a policy from the company can review actual policy coverage, terms, and conditions online. It does take a little digging to find the policies but many insurers don't provide this option at all.

Benefit Limits

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

Lemonade's app allows policyholders to receive reimbursements directly deposited to their bank accounts, cutting down on the steps you need to take to complete the claim process and time it takes to get your reimbursement. The company reports that some claims are reimbursed virtually instantly.
Reimbursement Model
Actual Cost

Deductibles - 4 / 5

Lemonade Pet Insurance policies are available with $100, $250, and $500 deductibles. This is the annual amount policyholders must contribute before the insurance kicks in. A low deductible may raise the cost of a policy, while a high deductible may require several visits to the vet at the policyholder's expense before the insurance starts to cover expenses.

When buying a Lemonade Pet insurance policy, customers must also choose a percentage of co-insurance: 70%, 80%, or 90%. This is the amount Lemonade Pet Insurance will reimburse on every vet visit after the deductible is covered. The rest must be paid by the policy holder. This is an important factor to keep in mind when choosing a policy because it can add up to a big expense in the long run.

So far I am not impressed. I'm not sure who is writing reviews on line for them - all I have done is pay premiums and when I submitted my dog's wellness & vaccines this week it went into "being reviewed" status. Others say they pay same day, but that is not my experience. I am still waiting. I will update this if they ever pay (and obviously will be canceling the insurance & trying to figure out where to report them in my State if I don't hear back in a timely fashion). 2/5/24: Crickets. Still waiting. Not sure why these folks with cats are getting immediate payment. That has not been my experience in getting wellness covered for my dog. I have to give a star to comment, but would give... Read More

Watch out bait and switch! Paid for insurance upfront and they have denied every claim. My dog had a thyroid problem and was ganing weight and they refused every single claim over 13 claims. Customer service is non existant and wish I never got involved with these mobsters!

This is absolutely the worst pet insurance I have ever used. It does have some positives like quick pay but the customer service is nonexistent and the coverages where vastly different from what I thought I was getting. Don't waste your time or be fooled by the low premium..it's a rip off and not there for they said they were

Our dog had seizures for the first time at 5 years old. Because this was our first claim, Lemonade requested medical records for the previous 12 months. Skip ahead one month from the initial claims submission and now their underwriter is asking for his neuter records from when he was 6 months old (4 1/2 years ago). The reviewer claims this is standard practice and written in the contract. The contract clearly states "nose to tail" medical records for previous 12 months. Requesting records for unrelated medical care well beyond the contracted review period service stinks of intential delays or intent to not pay. Multiple emails and multiple platitudes but we are still not reimbursed over a... Read More

I am very fair and very honest, I have to 3 policies. Well as of 9/12/22 I've cancel my policies on my 2 dogs. My experience with this company has been less than 1 star or should I say stone. Horrendous is a lower case. My dog had to be seen by a Vet for a MINOR illness -they denied my vet visit which they claim "Vet visits are not covered" I appeal they're answer and was still denied coverage after paying over$130 a month for (1 year of payments of $130) just ONE dog because of her age. MY point: What's the point on having Pet Insurance if this company denies Vet Visits or see it as additional coverage? If a pet owner gets pet insurance is for the same damn reason to be able to take... Read More

They hide behind "preexisting condition" to not pay benefits. My dog had a huge lipoma on the side of his chest, the size of a softball, that ballooned out and had to have surgery. He's 11. Because during an annual exam years ago they noted a couple of small lumps on the other side of his front chest that never needed treatment, no coverage because of a preexisting condition. What a bunch of bs (sorry). DO NOT PURCHASE INSURANCE FROM THEM. Also, took forever to process the claim. Too bad I had to give them 1 star.

I've read the reviews and I understand exactly what everyone is talking about. I've been put off by their process, the not-paying-for exams clause (even the pre-surgical consultation), their app, the personal info they request in order to reimburse and right now by their review process. But I've managed to work through all of it by reframing it, etc. Right now, I'm in review for a $3000+ surgical bill. Pretty straight forward claim, all the details were provided and support the claim. Yet the reviewer, someone new to our case, even though we've been dealing with this same medical issue for about 6 weeks and have had several related claims reviewed and reimbursed, sent me an email asking... I would recommend anyone looking for an insurance for their loving pet to look somewhere else, there are other pet insurance that are clearer with what they cover and less sketchy. I paid lemonade for almost a year for my 2 dogs and I regret deeply have given my money to them after all. They claimed to cover accidents which is why I care the most about having a pet insurance, Sadly when it happened they told me they don't cover the accident exams. So what are they covering? It is ridiculous. They gave me some specific words in their policy where it says they don't cover it, but in another section there are other words where it says they cover it and when I asked about that and why they...
