Summary

Trupanion has comprehensive coverage, no payout limits and 24/7/365 (including holidays) customer support all make it an excellent choice for financially protecting pets and pet owners against any sudden illness or accident. Like many of the top pet insurance services, it does not cover pre-existing conditions. The company's 90% reimbursement rate and no payout limit is just about the best deal you are going to find. Trupanion is the only pet insurance company who can pay your veterinarian directly, within seconds, at time of checkout. If your veterinarian does not offer Vet Direct Pay, Trupanion processes the majority of their claims within 2 days, many within minutes. There seems little going against Trupanion in terms of the overall quality of the services they provide. If you are looking for pet insurance in Canada, Trupanion is a must-look-at option.

This is a terrible company, prices go up ~20-40% every year. Do not sign up.

I had the Trupanion for 30 days, and filed two claims during that time. I have a new puppy that bumped her head and swallowed a chew toy. I was really excited about Trupanion because it seemed like such a great deal, with a $250 deductible and 90% coverage. Interestingly, even though they boast a 90% coverage, out of the 1,1000 I paid in total... only 300 was covered. They find ways to This is pretty pointless to me, especially when they want me to pay $160 a month to ensure her. It also took about three weeks for my first claim to be processed, and the customer service was very poor when I tried to get clarification on coverage. There are other affordable options that cover the same... Read More

Checked with my vet before signing up for insurance to get some good advice and he recommended Trupanion. I called Trupanion to ask a few questions and they answered immediately and the agent who assisted me was awesome, I was sold!

TERRIBLE customer service and communication. I called about an allergy claim which was denied just to know about the reason. I initially enrolled my pet in April, changed the deductible from $250 to $300 in July, submitted the claim in August. They told me that once I changed the deductible I would have to go through the 30 days wait period again, which I was not informed when I changed the deductible over the phone. But I accepted their reasoning to respect their company policy even though the agent on the phone did not properly inform me of this. Then I also asked about another claim that I submitted twice online, received confirmation twice in my email, however, did not appear on the... Read More

They trap you! Beware. I added a chiropractor rider and submitted a claim. The employee never mentioned this 5 day waiting period over the phone or else I wouldn't have claimed it right away. They said that if I use it for an issue in the 5 days, they will never cover for that same issue. I asked them to review my call to see that the employee didn't mention anything. They said that the declaration page that was sent by email mentions this 5 day period. I looked back and it says 0 waiting period! In the end after being with them for 3 years and hardly submitting claims, they said they couldn't do anything because the 5 day waiting period is hidden somewhere in the policy... I don't know... Trupanion miscommunicated (or perhaps downright lied) about preexisting condition exclusions, so now that I am leaving them I have much fewer options for my older pets, and I have paid plenty of premiums to them and never gotten a dime in coverage. (Which I understand is sometimes how insurance works if you don't need it, but we did and they failed, miserably.) Feb 2018: I move to Canada from the US. My prior pet insurance company doesn't exist here. But Trupanion does! I sign up. My pets have no huge issues, though one has had a tooth extracted for periodontal disease. Aug. 2018: That same pet needs more extractions. I call Trupanion, trying to budget for whether/when to do it at... Read More

I normally don’t write bad reviews ever, however, my bad experience with Trupanion must be shared to help future buyers. When we first got our puppy we were moving to a rural area known for fleas and ticks, so we went to the vet to start preventative care of a flea and tick medication. When we signed up for Trupanion they deemed that vet visit as a result of allergies and proceeded to deny every claim thereafter due to allergies being a pre-existing condition. Here are the specifics: Our puppy had heat rash – denied due to allergies. Then he got pink eye from the neighbor’s dog - denied due to allergies. Then he got pink eye again from the same neighbor dog – denied again due to... Read More

Knee injury is not an injury. Be very careful! Sales will use grey terminology to get the sale! If your dog has torn a knee, they have a degenerative disorder. That’s how it’s viewed. They don’t tell you that until you claim. It’s a great insurance loop hole. It looks like an injury, happens in a quick second, they call it degenerative disorder. It’s a 30 day wait and if there was ever a limp noted, you are not covered. Do yourself a favor, save money and pay the vet directly! You will never get full value for the life term spend to these companies, unless your pet has lots of issues. But then, what in the best interest of your pet. 100 a month, 700 deductible per injury. Do your own math... Read More

My premiums went up 475% over 13 years -- to almost $190 a month. Run from these people. There are good insurance companies out there, just not this one.

They’ve done everything possible to reject claims, deny, delay. It’s a scam.
