Pimsleur is a language course developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur a recognized expert in the field of linguistics and founding member of the American Council of the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

It offers more than 50 languages which utilize the “Pimsleur” way.  They claim that “30 minutes a day” is all it takes to learn a new language.

The program is primarily audio-based and users are advised to listen to these daily lessons which make up a complete course. There are 30 daily lessons per level and up to 5 levels in a complete course.

What’s Included?

The program is audio-based and comes as a digital download with a mobile app. The Pimsleur Method has been employed by the FBI, the Marine Corps, Homeland Security, and the State Department.

How Does It Work?

Pimsleur is based on four key principles developed by Dr. Pimsleur. It focuses on organic learning and how children acquire their communication skills.

He developed a method of organizing materials of a language so it can be taught as a steady stream of speech to enter the student’s consciousness and absorbed by the brain.

Graduated Interval Recall

One of the most important aspects of learning a new language is to build your vocabulary. This is done by constantly memorizing new words in order to create phrases or sentences. Other languages such as Rosetta or Fluenz achieve this by correlating pictures with words but Pimsleur does this through a series of audio tracks.

New words are introduced gradually with increasing “intervals” to help students remember words for a progressively longer time. This is done through a pre-determined interval to move these words from the short-term memory to permanent memory.

Principle of Anticipation

Communication is enabled through automatic responses in the brain. Pimsleur tries to build these reactions making responses automatic. New brain connections are made through exercises.

Learning is made through understanding, pausing for a response and reinforcing correct responses. This is done repeatedly until correct responses are given automatically.

Core Vocabulary

Pimsleur builds your vocabulary by introducing a set number of words within a pre-determined time. This steady stream of words is stored and reinforced to build a student’s core vocabulary. But words are carefully chosen, those which are determined to be most useful for communicating effectively. It does not try to force a huge number of words which only serves to frustrate a student.

Pimsleur does not put emphasis on the amount of time needed to learn a course. It is designed to work at a pace that a student is most comfortable with. This they believe gives the brain the time it needs to digest the information and create a working vocabulary.

Organic Learning

Pimsleur brings about teaching by presenting each lesson in a conversational manner.

Every new item introduced in a Pimsleur course is given within the context of a conversation or exchange. This helps learning and retention by allowing your brain to automatically integrate intonation, rhythm, melody, and pronunciation, to embedding prompts for your memory. Conversations are designed to help the student learn proper pronunciation and formulate responses automatically.

  • Graduated Interval Recall - Memory building
  • The Principle of Anticipation - Automatic brain response
  • Core Vocabulary - Focused learning, limits on how much you learn at a given time
  • Organic Learning - Language is learned in context rather than in a vacuum

I was never good at languages in school, somewhere in the middle of the last century. In recent years with encouragement from my wife I tried a couple of other language learning programs with little success and a frustrating experience. I read some reviews and decided to try the free trial of Pimsleur German. I was so intrigued I asked for a subscription for Christmas. They say you can do a lesson a day but for me I repeat them and do about 3 a week. I am learning a language like I never could before and having fun. I am no stranger to learning as I have a PhD.

This method really does work, and it's easy to use. Just put the lessons in your phone and listen and repeat while you do chores around the house, etc. It's much easier than sitting in front of the computer looking at pictures. With this method you listen and speak, just like you did when you learned your first language as a child. It works. When you travel after having learned the language this way, you are able to listen and speak, understand and be understood. For example - after losing my wallet in Paris, I called the American Express office, and I was able to tell the non-English speaking person on the other line "No need to get someone who speaks English." Over the phone and... Read More

I am a big believer in the Pimsleur language learning method. This despite the fact that I am more of a visual rather than auditory learner. The only formal language study I ever had was a couple of years of Latin while in high school. I sold my business and retired 3 years ago and my wife and I are enjoying life. We have visited 55 countries, many within the last three years. I elected to use the Pimsleur method to study Modern Greek before spending a month in Greece in the summer of 2016. Guess what? After 6 months of study, I spoke Greek well enough to ask directions, order food and drink, check into hotels, talk about the weather, haggle prices and converse with non English... Read More

I have used the Pimsleur method over the years for German and Spanish, primarily when it was an oral language course. The Pimsleur process introduces words in a staggered basis: It will be introduced, then repeated, and again...then a gap while other material is reused, then the new word is used again. The process repeats with longer periods of time between the times the word is used, which helps the brain transfer from short term to long term memory. And it does work! Years later, I remember the vocabulary of these courses. The second thing I enjoy is that the basic course material was structured to be learned orally, such as in your car. The online versions also give you written... Read More
