Plans

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) - These plans feature a low premium and low copay. However, you must first see your primary care physician in order to get a referral to see a specialist.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) - These plans are generally more expensive because they do not require you to first consult your primary care physician before seeing a specialist.

Health Savings Account (HSA) - Patients can deposit non-taxed funds into a savings account exclusively for medical costs.

Point of Service Plans (POS Plans) - Under these plans customers must choose their primary provider from within the company's network, but only have limited access to specialists.

High Deductible Health Plans (HDHP) - These plans feature low premiums but very high deductibles for medical care.

Short-Term Health Insurance - Short term health insurance plans are lower cost plans with higher deductibles, coinsurance, and sometimes copays. They are not ACA compliant and not required to cover pre-existing conditions. They are ideal for healthy/young individuals or those ineligible until ACA open enrollment. Short term plans should be used as a stopgap measure to protect against emergencies and unexpected medical bills.

Obamacare Plans

Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans are available through Health Insurance Online during open enrollment, or if applicants have experienced a Qualifying Life Event. These plans are federally regulated and must all cover the "10 Essential Benefits" which include:

  • Ambulatory services
  • Emergency services
  • Hospitals
  • Maternity and newborn
  • Substance abuse and mental health
  • Prescription drugs
  • Rehabilitative services
  • Labs
  • Preventative and wellness
  • Pediatric services that include dental and vision

ACA plans are broken down into 4 "metal" tiers, including bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. The main difference in plans is the amount of coinsurance you pay verses your monthly premium. With bronze plans customers will pay 40% of all medical costs, these are good for generally healthy people and young folks who do not anticipate medical problems who want to pay a low monthly premium. Conversely, platinum plan customers only pay 10%, an ideal arrangement for those who anticipate lots of medical expenses and are able to pay a high monthly premium. Customers will be liable for their percentage up until their out of pocket maximum, then the plan will cover 100% of further expenses.
