Renaissance Dental, part of the Renaissance Family of Companies, is a dental insurance provider with over 55 years of experience in the industry. The company, founded in 1957 and headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, has 300,000 access points across the nation and offers fully-insured dental plans with two levels of coverage for groups of all sizes.

Renaissance Dental Review

Renaissance Dental offers flexible and specialized dental insurance coverage for individuals, families, and groups. It is the flagship product of Renaissance Life & Health Insurance Company of America and Renaissance Health Insurance Company of New York.

What's included with Renaissance Dental Plans?

Renaissance Dental offers a choice of three plans. Renaissance Dental Plans I and III cover a wide range of preventive, palliative, and curative dental procedures, from cleanings to fillings to root canal surgery. Both Plans I and III feature very low deductibles—$0 and $50 respectively. Depending on whether you visit an in-network or out-of-network dentist, Plan I can reimburse you as much as 100% for preventive care (in-network.) Plan III reimburses 90% for in-network preventive care. With both Plans I and III, complex procedures like oral surgery and prosthodontics are reimbursed at 50%. However, both plans enforce a 12-month waiting period before you can draw on your benefits for more serious services. So as you consider your options, note that you will have to pay into your plan for a year before you can get coverage for these treatments. As with many dental policies, Renaissance isn't a get-fixed-quick strategy if you're already in need of major dental work.

Renaissance's Progressive plan has a low $50 deductible and covers preventive treatment at the 100% reimbursement level. Other treatments are covered at a lower reimbursement rate, which is also lower than the rate offered by Plans I and III. The Progressive plan is designed to be a low-cost alternative and may be a good choice for people who enjoy solid dental health. In addition, if you subscribe to the Progressive Plan, it reimburses at a progressively higher rate in years two and three of coverage—hence, its name. That's a novel approach that the company believes encourages customers to maintain their dental health with preventive treatment. The one caveat that may deter customers from choosing this plan is that it restricts you to seeing in-network providers. But you have some 300,000 in-network providers to choose from.

One thing to keep in mind concerning in-network and out-of-network providers under a Renaissance plan is this. If you visit a dentist that participates in the Renaissance PPO network, you will never have to pay charges that exceed the negotiated rates for covered services (also known as balance billing). However, if you go to an out-of-network dentist, you will be responsible for the difference between Renaissance Dental’s allowed amount and the amount charged by the non-participating dentist. That amount may exceed the allowable amount under Renaissance's schedule of fees.

Benefits of choosing a Renaissance PPO in-network dentist:

  • Lower out-of-pocket expenses.
  • No paperwork. Your dentist will fill out all forms and file claims for you.
  • You’re responsible only for your deductible and/or co-insurance charges.
  • You will not have to pay charges that exceed the negotiated rates for covered services (balance billing).

How much does Renaissance Dental coverage cost?

You can request a policy quote for Plans I and III on the Renaissance website by entering your birthdate and zip code. Currently, the site is not providing quotes for the Progressive plan but we expect that's an oversight on the company's part that will be corrected soon. Our sample quote request for the company's mid-priced product Plan III for a 25-year old customer living in Orange County, CA returned a premium cost of $44.88 a month. As you weigh the value of purchasing a Renaissance plan, bear in mind that Renaissance plans come with low annual limits, ranging from $1,000 to $1,600 depending on which plan you select. The cost of treating many dental problems can easily exceed policy limits.

Premiums

Your dental insurance premiums will vary depending on your location, age, the plan you select and the number of family members you choose to cover with Renaissance.

Fine print

There is a one-time, non-refundable, $35 set up fee charged with the first month’s premium. Rates also include $1.00 per month for membership in the World Travelers of America, Inc. (WTA), and a $4.00 monthly billing fee. Membership in World Travelers of America, Inc. is required to enroll in this plan. Should you decide to enroll in this dental plan, you will be prompted during the enrollment process to confirm your acceptance of both the membership in WTA and the non-refundable setup charge.

Annual Maximum

Renaissance Plan I limits annual coverage to $1,600. Plan III limits annual coverage to $1,000. These limits are for the first year only and increase in years two and three for customers who continue to pay their premiums. If you don't anticipate needing a lot of dental work, these coverage limits may be perfectly adequate for your needs. If you need serious work in your first year on a plan, such as a root canal and crown, your coverage may quickly be exhausted, though.

Treatments Covered and Reimbursement

All Renaissance plans cover preventive, minor, and major services. These include oral surgery, periodontic, endodonic, and prosthodontic treatment. TMJ treatment is also a covered service. Coverage for preventive services is 100% for all plans, including the low-cost Progressive plan. Renaissance has a somewhat confusing reimbursement structure, with co-pay percentages that vary by type of treatment—and by plan—so spend a little time studying those details to fully understand what you're getting for your policy premiums.

Summary

Renaissance Dental offers an extensive network of dental providers and modest premiums. The company's Progressive plan is innovative and is extremely affordable. Renaissance is a great choice for people who can bank on their teeth being pretty healthy.

All the bad reviews are true. You don't get much coverage from them (it's virtually like not having insurance). The reason I stuck with it is they have structure where after paying in for 1-2 years you receive more coverage for larger procedures. After making payments to this company for 3+ years, my automatic payments were interrupted without my realizing it and my account terminated. When I became aware of this, I called to fix the mistake. They told me my coverage was terminated and that I could not reinstate coverage until January of next year. I asked about qualifying for larger coverage that I'd been working toward for years and they said that would be subject to starting over.... Read More

Apparently the dental Renaissance I’ve been getting through this company called Suremed I was so happy to go to the dentist to realize that it didn’t do anything for me. They pocket me was supposed to be no co-pay and was charged $245 on top. They want me to pay the Dentist for seven grand I am no multi million dollar person to these people are supposed to help and with people on low income where exactly do people think we’re going to get this type of money this is uncalled for I don’t understand why people do things like this. Please be careful for who you decide to do your insurance with. Apparently I should’ve done more research when I canceled my account.

BE CAREFUL. I've had a Renaissance Denali Plan for over four years. the time between submission of a claim and reimbursement has gradually increased year over year, often getting a response that they "never received the claim" and I had to resend all the paperwork six weeks later and reset the time again. My last few claims I sent via certified mail requiring a signature, so I knew the date it was actually received by Renaissance. My last claim was received on September 26, two months ago, and I have yet to receive reimbursement. Not only that, but I cannot even find a record of it being in process, so completely in the dark if I will ever receive funds that I paid the dentist myself.... Read More

Consider yourself very lucky if this company actually reimburses you for dental work received. Almost always they "did not receive your claim". Don't even think about seeing your claim paid earlier than six weeks. After that you send question about claim and the answer is "sorry, it was never received"......the same old insurance trick that's been played for decades. So ALWAYS copy every claim you send them because you'll be sending it another two or three times.

I have spent two entire days off work attempting to make an appointment with a dentist for a broken front tooth. Very few of the dentists listed on the website actually accept Renaissance. The ones that do are not accepting new patients. I attempted to call the member services phone number and I was on hold for almost an hour. The woman who helped me advised me that she was pulling names off the same defunct list on the same public website that I was, and therefore, the hour I had waited to speak to her was entirely futile. This insurance is almost double the same coverage at MetLife, and everyone takes that. I feel cheated. Do not believe the hype.

WARNING!! Do not use them for dental insurance. Hands down the worst insurance company that I have ever dealt with. I have tried contacting them multiple times in regards to canceling my insurance. No answer and no call back. Very unprofessional company and very little coverage. I Have absolutely no clue how they have a 3.9 star rating. Don't waste your time nor you hard earned money. I go to one of the top dentists in my area and do not recommend this company.

A truly horrible insurance company. They wouldn't pay for an X-ray because it's "not diagnostic or preventative". More precisely: A 6mo waiting period was needed after setting up the policy before they would pay for certain things. An X-ray was one of those things because of the stupid way it was categorized.

If I could leave a negative 100 stars I would!! This has to be the worst dental insurance out there. My son had oral surgery in June 2020, the surgeons office called to make sure the procedure was covered in advance. Now 7 months & 19 claim submissions later, Renaissance still says that they have not received the claims. I can understand possibly 1 or 2 submissions but 19 times is beyond insanity. We have called, the oral surgeons office has called and all you get is the run around. Take my advice and keep your money in your pocket because these people are jokes. I will be filing a complaint with the Indiana Department of Insurance to investigate this company.

Just had my biannual teeth cleaning today, the family had there's two months ago. Found out the dental office that is within network of the plan had filed the claim of the family care a couple months ago and they were paid $100.40 total for all three family members teeth cleaning, x-rays and exam. We have a bill for $1,042 from that care that we were told covered 80% of preventative and diagnostic care. Do NOT go with Renaissance Dental Plans. TOTAL SCAM!!!!!!!!
