Financial Strength

Overall Rating: 4.8 / 5 (Excellent)

Toggle makes a winning effort to configure its renters insurance packages to the needs of today’s tenants. From its wholly web-based interface to its optional pet and side-hustle riders, the company's offerings are definitely innovative, attractive, and reasonably priced.

Of course the true test of an insurance company comes when claims are made—and here, because Toggle is so relatively new, we simply don’t have enough evidence to make an assessment. Because the highest amount of liability coverage currently offered is $300,000, Toggle may not be the best choice for high net worth individuals, but for younger people who are taking their first steps toward financial stability, the coverage should be more than sufficient.

Toggle is backed by Farmers Insurance Group, which has rock-solid financials. Overall, the company offers the financial strength of a large, old-established insurer combined with the innovation that one would expect from an insurance startup.

Toggle Coverage

Coverage Options - 4.6 / 5

Toggle is unusual--if not unique--in offering a true all-perils renters insurance policy. Their policies cover earthquakes (except in California), floods, tornadoes, breakage, dog bites, and more in addition to the usual coverage for theft, property damage, and liability. Policyholders can add a significant other to their policy and can choose between present value and replacement value coverage. Liability coverage can be purchased at the $100,000, $200,000, and $300,000 levels. The company's standard policy also covers bed bug remediation.

Toggle offers some interesting optional coverages that are clearly designed with today's lifestyles (and the risks they entail) in mind. Toggle offers a "pet parent" package (without breed restrictions) that provides coverage when pets damage the residence, when they have to be boarded in situations where the premises become uninhabitable, or when they cause injury to another person. It provides optional coverage to people who have run small businesses--"side hustles"--out of their apartment and for the equipment they use. Side-hustle liability and loss of income coverages are included in this option. For a few dollars more, people can also purchase credit and identity monitoring. Toggle also offers a "credit lift" system that documents on-time rent payments on the policyholder's credit report.

Exclusions

While Toggle does not impose breed restrictions on coverage for its policyholders' animals, it does exclude specific, individual pets that have a history of biting people. Earthquake coverage not available in California. Pet parent coverage must be purchased in order to obtain pet liability protection.

Coverage Fine Print

Toggle allows policyholders to insure high-value equipment, but does not require them to specifical schedule or list out their expensive electronics and other gear.

Pricing & Discounts

Add-Ons & Discounts - 4.8 / 5

Toggle doesn't offer many discounts off its already-low prices, but it does offer a decreasing deductible with every claim-free year a person is insured. However, another way that Toggle saves policyholders money is by offering them policies that are far more adjustable and customizable than those offered by their competitors. Coverage levels, deductibles, and various optional coverages can be adjusted independently of each other. This ensures that policyholders are just getting the insurance they want, rather than being compelled to select an insurance package that may include features that aren't needed.
Annual Premium
Starting at $60
Deductible Options
Deductibles decrease with each claim-free year of coverage.
Maximum Liability Coverage
$300,000

Customer Experience

Customer Service - 5 / 5

Toggle truly excels in how it makes shopping for renters insurance quick and easy. All policies are sold online. The company doesn't have an app, but its website was specifically designed for mobile devices and displays nicely on them.

One of Toggle's most innovative customer service features gives prospective policyholders the ability to see in real time how changing the kind of coverages they buy affects their monthly premiums. This kind of transparency enables customers to assess the inevitable trade-offs between their budgets and their insurance needs.

Since Toggle is one of the newer entries in the renters insurance market, it doesn't have much reputation evidence yet to evaluate. The company doesn't have reviews or comments on the BBB or Trust Pilot. We encourage Toggle customers to leave comments about the company on our site and others so that other consumers can benefit from such experiences.

Financial Strength Ratings

Financial Strength - 4.8 / 5

Although Toggle is a new insurance brand, it's owned and backed by Farmers Insurance, which has been around for over 90 years and is one of the largest insurers in the country. Policies are underwritten by Farmers and its subsidiaries, so prospective customers shouldn't worry unduly about the company being unable to pay claims.

I absolutely agree with the previous reviews. They will automatically renew your policy. No refund will be given once you found out that you have been paying the rental insurance that you knowingly did not renew. After money not for service. Just go to some reliable and trustworthy companies like AAA, Geico, Progressive.

You are one of the best scam artists/thieves in the business. You take our money, have poor customer and communication services, force policyholders into an autopay only subscription service, and then cancel their policies for one missed payment after making all other payments towards premium. Force them to get new policies because you refuse to reinstate current policies and then deny them coverage when an accident does happen! Because you refused, I demanded a full refund of all money paid and you still refused! Thieves and scam artists!!!

My home caught fire on 03/03/2024, i pay for temporary living coverage and today is 03/07/2024 and still my claim adjuster has done nothing but play email tag with me! I have all the emails back and forth in a file and i'm considering reaching out to the media, insurance commission and an attorney because this is nuts! I even told my adjuster I had slept in my truck with my 2 dogs on 03/05/2024 and still she did nothing and so of course i had to sleep in my truck again last night!! This company pours gallons and gallons of Salt into a fresh cut! Not sure about anyone else but this is my experience currently!!

Awful company. I am in the military and have move alot. Canceled when I moved out in June of 2021, and because I usually just pay off my credit card fully each month it was not until today that I just noticed they have been charging my credit card for six months since I moved and canceled the insurance policy. So I paid for $66 dollars for an invalid address and for nothing. I called but was put on hold for ten minutes only to be told by a machine to leave a message instead. I went to the website instead and chatted with a Joshua Lind, and he refused to give me a refund for those months even though he confirmed that I did inform Toggle I moved out and asked to cancel the policy in June,... I like the fact that you can change your Toggle coverage instantly online and the cost difference is posted before accepting. Also, the pricing is easy on the budget.

This company is a SCAM! This is an insurance company that is structured to only collect, and not to payout the value or even close to what you lost. If you want to be protected from unforeseen events in the future, do NOT use this company. There are so many better options for you. When I was looking for information about this company, it was very hard. They do not have a listed number, and that's because Toggle isn't real, they are actually 21 Century Insurance, that uses the trade name 'Toggle'. I had a situation were the contents of my garage were taken. Fortunately I had a lot of digital evidence, receipts, sworn statement from the property manager, and a police incident report....
