Founded in 1868, MetLife is one of the largest insurance companies in the United States. Previously, they offered short-term and long-term disability insurance policies for individuals. Currently, however, they only provide group disability policies. Employers are able to pre-select benefits and offer them to their employees at discounted rates.

Unfortunately for individuals looking for disability insurance, MetLife is no longer an option. However, employees who are being offered a group policy with MetLife will be able to receive benefits, as well as MetLife's 150-year experience in handling claims.

MetLife Policies & Coverage

Policies & Coverage - 8 / 10

MetLife offers long-term and short-term disability group policies for businesses who want to help their employees protect their income. Employers select which key features to offer their employees by setting the elimination period, maximum benefit, and benefit period, as well as the income percentage available. By surveying a series of group policies found online, we can determine that both STD and LTD policies offer employees 60% of their income, with elimination periods ranging from 14–180 days. Maximum weekly benefits for STD seem to be capped at $2,500, while LTD monthly benefits range from $8,000–$12,000. These benefits will vary depending on what your employer offers.

MetLife Reputation & Customer Experience

Reputation & Customer Experience - 6 / 10

MetLife has a D- rating with the Better Business Bureau, which appears to be caused by the business's failure to respond to a number of customer complaints filed with the organization. The negative reviews regarding disability insurance that we could find revolved around customers' dissatisfaction with how long it took to resolve emerging disability claims. On the other hand, the NAIC complaint report identified 122 complaints resolved in the complainants' favor against MetLife. The content of these complaints is not available, but they only constituted a 0.75 ratio (1.00 is the national average).
