PetPartners Coverage

Coverage - 3 / 5

PetPartners offers a basic pre-built plan as well as plans that are highly customizable. Customers can select an accident or illness plan or combine the two in one policy. The company also offers a few riders that can add coverage not found in its default accident and illness policies.

By default, PetPartners' policies exclude hereditary and congenital conditions. Coverage can be added for these conditions for a fee, but these are conditions most standard pet insurance policies do cover. While PetPartners' premiums are considerably lower than average, customers should take these exclusions into account when comparing plan costs.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 3 / 5

PetPartners offers pet owners several choices when it comes to benefits limits, including one they call "unlimited." However, in some states, the company also imposes a per-incident lifetime limit, which means that benefits for treating a chronic condition are limited. Other plans we've reviewed do offer a truly unlimited benefit plan, with no annual benefit limit, no per-condition limit, and no lifetime cap on policy payouts. PetPartners is in the process of reviewing its plans and a true unlimited benefits policy may soon become available nationwide.

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 2.5 / 5

PetPartners offers three co-pay choices: 30%, 20%, and 10%. Higher co-pays translate into lower premiums.

The company uses a benefits schedule to calculate how much it will pay for any given veterinary service. That means your actual vet bill—what your vet expects to be paid—isn't the amount the company uses in figuring what it pays out on a claim. In our experience, benefit schedules tend not to reflect real vet bills. But they are one way pet insurers limit their costs. Some customers may find the discrepancy between a plan's benefits schedule and their actual vet bills problematic, particularly if they live in an area where services tend to be more expensive than average.

Premiums on policies that use a benefit schedule reimbursement model are typically lower than those that use an actual cost reimbursement model. That's an advantage, no doubt. But, particularly when selecting a high co-pay, customers should weigh the value of paying less for a policy that may not fully cover their veterinary costs.

Deductibles - 3.5 / 5

PetPartners' deductible schedule is more flexible than other companies', offering multiple options between $100 and $1,000.

Higher deductibles will translate into lower monthly premiums.

Pricing: How much does PetPartners cost?

Cost - 2.5 / 5

PetPartners charges comparatively low premiums on their standard policies. However, their standard policies don't include some of the coverage that's standard in other companies' policies. It's a little challenging to compare their coverage apples to apples, unless you select some optional riders to match the coverage of other companies' plans. That's the best way to assess PetPartners policy value versus other plans.

On the flip side, some customers don't want all that coverage. They want a price that suits their budget. PetPartners does afford customers more opportunity to customize by breaking coverage down into multiple component parts.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 3 / 5

PetPartners has no upper age limit when it comes to accident coverage.

However, for illness coverage the pet must be 9 or younger.

Dogs must be at least 8 weeks and cats 10 weeks.

There is a 14-day waiting period for illnesses and 3 days for accidents.

Intervertebral Disc Disease and cruciate ligament related conditions have a 180-day waiting period.

This is more or less standard across providers.

I have had this pet insurance for over 2 years, when I submitted my claims, which I submitted three times, only to be told that I only have accident insurance. Buyer beware!!!

I was offered a 30 day trial with the purchase of my puppy through AKC Reunite. I received this e-mail from PetPartners, but when trying to activate it, there was nothing but issues. I gave them all the information they requested to redeem the offer, but never a reply to resolve this, only spam mail to purchase. If it's this difficult to redeem a 30 day free trial offer that they sent, I can only imagine how difficult they would make redeeming any compensation from their insurance company. Personally, I would stay clear of this one, being that the reviews are not reflecting satisfied customers. At least I didn't spend anything to find out how awful they are.

I had been paying for pet insurance since 2012 on my German Sheperd, When it finally came time to file a claim I was informed by PetPartners I only had accident insurance, which in my declaration page I have was Companion Select and ExamCare, Well my dog got sick and I had to take her into critical care and all the exams and tests that said they were covered in declarations page are not. Supposedly my companion care turned into accident care but either way they said they won't cover any expenses. And my dog died. Watcjh out for this company, they don't explain too much, and after $8000+ and 10 years of payments my dog was not covered according to them. What a scam. Buyer beware!!!

My wife and I just canceled our plan. After submitting covered items to Pet Partners they conveniently decided that they would not cover over a "waiting period" that originally said 3 days and they updated to 14 only after we submitted our paper work. Don't waste your money

Poor customer experience, submitted claim on 2/14/2017 and claim was finalized on 05/09/2017. Every time I would ask for clarification on what the policy covered, I would not get a straight answer, disappointing that it had to take this long to be finalized and still have not been received benefits yet. I talked with Amy (customer service rep) and she could not tell me where or when I would receive, just that the EOB would be mailed out with the check. I talked to supervisor Adam on 5/2/2017 and he told me that I would receive a email of the EOB the next day and that did not happen; lack of communication. I would recommend looking at all your options before going with this company.

Very tricky and slow on reviewing the claims. Wait period for accidents injuries is 3 THREE DAYS! Impossible to get a customer care supervisor on a line. Seems like a very small company with a big ambitions. Better go with other insurance companies
